ACHERON - Decade Infernus 1988-1998 (2 CD) (2004)
(USA)
ACHERON formed back in 1988 after founder Vincent Crowley left the band NOCTURNUS. Creating his own demonic entity to make the world witness the new age of Satan. Acheron released several albums throughout their career, which have all become underground classics. The band broke up for a short time but refounded recently. They just recorded their first new album since 1998 ("Rebirth: Metamorphosing into Godhood"). Because Acheron's past releases where always hard to find, the band and Black Lotus Records decided to release a "best-off" album which contains 32 remastered tracks on 2 CD's. This double CD is limited to 3000 copies and i'm one of the lucky bastards to receive it for a review! This is a very rare, great release containing the whole history of the band through music and text. |
AFTER ALL - The Vermin Breed (CD) (June 2005)
(Belgium)
After All from Belgium already released their debut album in 1995 and this album is the bands 8th release. After All's sound is rooted in the old school metal tradition with a clear tendency towards the heavier side of thrashmetal. For the recordings of this 5th full-length album the band teamed up with "cult" producer Harris Johns who produced a lot of cult albums in the past with bands like: VoiVod, Helloween, Kreator, etc. |
AFTER DEATH - Reviving the Gods (CDemo) (2004)
(USA)
'Before Christ - After Death' is an old songtitle of the first Nocturnus album "The Key". Well, that's the right answer!! AFTER DEATH is the "new" band of former Nocturnus drummer/singer Mike Browning!. This CDemo contains 4 songs which do have some Nocturnus influences but to be honest; the songs on this demo sound much much weirder! Maybe it's because of the dominating keyboard sound. The keyboards mostly sound like a church organ. But i have to admit that Mike & Co did it again; this stuff is very original but i doubt if the Nocturnus fans will love this kind of music. For myself: after several listening sessions i loved the new stuff!!
The only complain on this demo is the moderate production which is done by Jon Oliva (Savatage). Maybe he was stoned again during the producing/mixing of this album, hahaha. Next time guys (and girl), you have to go to the MorrisSound studios!!
Nevertheless, i was very surprised by this band and i'm very glad Mike Browning didn't loose his roots!! |
AGANKAST - Scotlands Finest (CDemo) (October 2005)
(Scotland)
Agankast is a band from Scotland that was formed only a few years ago by ex-Atomkraft guitarist Rob Matthew Redhead. To be honest; i never liked the standard metal of Atomkraft. The more is was surprised by this CDemo of Agankast! The band plays a kind of NWOBHM but then with some aggresive elements in their songs. I was thinking of a mix between bands like: Motorhead, Venom, Kreator and Wargasm. The songs on this demo nevertheless have a fresh and modern touch! Don't excpect any nu-metal/hardcore influences; this is very solid metal on a pretty high level. No technical bullshit; just full speed ahead metal! This kind of metal would have had a lot of succes in the eighties! That's probably the main reason i like this band. Good CD! |
AGANKAST - Dance of the Dead (CD) (October 2005)
(Scotland)
For a history of this band, take a look at the CDemo review above. This is the bands first full length album which is self financed. The band still plays a mix of NWOBHM and thrashmetal in an original way. The songs on this full length album sound even heavier and extremer then their demo stuff, probably because of the rawer voice and production. Some of the new songs sound even like deathmetal songs to me because of this. Personally i prefer their demo stuff above this well produced album. After all it is very strange that this band has not signed any recorddeal yet because they deserve it and nowadays there are lots of worse bands that do have a recordlabel!! So recordlabels & thrashmetalfans; check out this band!! Dont expect anything like Atomkraft; this is much better!! |
AGENT STEEL - Earth Under Lucifer ( Mini-CD) (2004)
(USA) Agent Steel has always, and still is, been one of my alltime fav. bands. Also the new line-up with Bruce Hall kicks ass! But to be honest; i was a bit disappointed when i first heard their new album "Order of the Illuminati". During the "Bonded over Europe tour" i spoke to Bruce about it and het asked me if that was the reason i didnt review the album on my website? I had to laugh and said: No, i only do reviews of CD's & Demo's i get for free.....and i wasn't lying!! I would love to review all of my CD's but then i have to quit my job!! So after a while Bruce came back and offered me the new Mini-CD of Agent Steel. I didn't even mean it as a hint!! Well, here's my review: I'm glad they took one of the best songs from their last album as a "single". As a bonus there are three live-songs on this EP; Mad Locust Rising, Unstoppable Force, Agents of Steel (my alltime fav. song). This is a very good choice because everyone who was still sceptic about Bruce Hall now will shut their mouth!! This guy is singing like a siren too!! So buy this EP a.s.a.p!!! Visit their website at: http://www.agentsteelonline.com/ |
AIRGED L'AMH - The Silver Arm (CD) (December 2004)
(Greece)
Airged L'amh is a band from Athens, Greece. Airged L'amh is a Gaelic word which means in plain English: "The Silver Arm". In 1996 the band already recorded their first demo called "A Vertigo Edda Arise". After 1998 there were several changes in the line-up because some of the members had to serve their duty in the army. In 2002 the band signed with 'Metal Reunion Records' and the first demo was re-released containing 2 new songs with the new line-up of the band. At the end of 2003 the band enters the studio to record "The Silver Arm". The album is a concept story based on an ancient Celtic legend. This album earned the band a contract with 'Black Lotus Records'. The music sounds pretty unique mostly because their singer (Steve Venardo) has a strange, but original, voice. To compare this album therefore with any other band is very difficult. The band plays a mix of heavy power & epic metal with some folk elements. I also hear a lot of 80's metal back in their songs. Just listen to this album and judge for yourself if you like it, personally i really enjoyed it and i hope to see the band alive sometime during one of the great (German) festivals! After Innerwish another good band from Greece!! |
ALTERED AEON - Dispiritism (CD) (March 2005)
(Sweden )
Altered Aeon was formed in 2001 when drummer Henrik Ohlsson (Theory in Practice, Mutant) presented a bunch of songs to Kjell Andersson (vocals, Azotic Reign). The name of the band was Thrawn in these days. Due to working with their traditional bands it took quite some time before they had developed the sound they wanted for Thrawn. In 2002 guitarplayer Nicklas Rehn was added to the line-up and the band started rehearsing a lot for their first recording "Light Creates Shadows". For this recording they had some help from Per Nilsson (guitar) and it was recorded by Jonas Kjellgren (Carnal Forge). The line-up was completed when Per Nilsson joined the band as a full member and Ander Hedlund (bass) joined the band too. The band later inked a 3-record deal with Black Lotus Records. During the recording of this album they decided to change the bandname into Altered Aeon. |
ANAND - Joy 4 Ever (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
Lion Music surprised me this time with several good/great technicals bands!! Anand is on of them. This guy was born in Surinam (South America) and moved to The Netherlands at the age of 5 (offcourse with his parents!). He calls his biggest influence Joe Satriani and that is noticeable! Anand recorded his first solo album (A man's mind) after winning the price of "Best guitarplayer of Holland" 96-97. This new CD is totally instrumental but isn't boring at all. He already did some supportacts for Tony MacAlpine and now he's putting a band together to promote his music. When you have the opportunity to visit one of his shows, just grab it!! You'll be surprised! Anand is already confirmed for this years Headway prog-festival (see LINKS) in Amstelveen, The Netherlands (3 & 4 april). |
ANGEL - Don't wanna run (mini CD) (September 2005)
(Norway)
Angel is a new band/project of ex-Trail of Tears (and now in Imperia) singer Helena Michaelsen.
This EP contains 4 songs that don't remind me to her Trail of Tears period. All the songs are acoustic and don't have the typical gothic touch you should expect from Helena. |
ANNIHILATOR - Schizo Deluxe (CD) (November 2005)
(Canada)
It has been just over 16 years since the release of the critically-acclaimed, debut masterpiece, "Alice In Hell". 20 tours, 10 studio cds, 2 live cds, a few compilations and "Best Of's" and some million+ in sales later, Canada's Annihilator is set to unleash their latest album: "Schizo Deluxe". |
A PERFEKT MURDER - Strength through Vengeance (CD) (November 2005)
(Canada)
"Strength Through Vengeance.", is A Perfect Murder's second album. The band plays a mix of classic thrash metal, southern sludge and hardcore; a steely testament to it's purifying power. |
ARTENSION - Future World (CD) (June 2005)
(USA)
It was sometime in '92/'93, when Vitalij Kuprij, who was studying classical music in Switzerland at that time, met Roger Staffelbach, a Swiss guitarist who was also studying at the Jazz School in Lucerne.
They soon founded their band "Atlantis Rising", which played several instrumental gigs in Switzerland. After having recorded some demos, they got in touch with Mike Varney of Shrapnel Records, who showed great interest in the band but suggested to add some vocal lines to their songs. |
ARTILLERY HELL - CDemo (August 2005)
(USA)
Artillery Hell was formed in the summer of 2000 by Robert Anderson and Mike Knittel. First under the name 'Dreadnaught'. In the beginning the band played only covers. After several line-up changes the band began writing their own material and they where heavily inspired by bands such as; Morbid Angel, Slayer and later Cradle of Filth. |
ATLANTIDA - Promo EP (CD) (2004)
(Brasil)
This progressive metal band from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil was formed in 1994 under the name "ATLANTIS". In the beginning they used to play heavy/thrashmetal, but after some line-up changes they switched their musical concept to a more progressive style. Bands like Dream Theater, Symphony X and even the older Queensryche are their main influences. I also hear some jazz-parts back in their songs. They will soon release a full lenght CD called " Painted Realities" and i'm very curious for that one because the songs on this Promo EP already sound very good!!! The future for these guys is looking great if you ask my opninion!! |
ATTACKER - Promo 2005 (CD) (January 2005)
(USA)
Attacker is an US band that plays 80's thrash/speedmetal just like they did already years ago. Last year they already released their " Soul Taker" album ( see Archive Reviews) and that one was GREAT!!! Well, a few months ago i met Mike Sabatini again and he gave me this 3-song ('I am Sin', 'The Unknown', 'Brain Shake') promo CD with some rough mixes of new songs from their forthcoming album "The Unknown". On October 17th, the band entered the recording studio to begin work on this next album. The album will contain 8 new tracks. The project will emanate from world renowned TRAX EAST RECORDING Studios in New Jersey. Artwork for the new Attacker album will be illustrated by Jowita Kaminska. Ms. Kaminska is an established artist from Poland and has designed album covers for DECEASED, EXODUS and many others. |
ATTACKER - Soul Taker (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Last week i had the honour to see this US "cult" trashband at the Keep it True festival in Germany. From the original (debut album) line-up there are three members left; Bob Mitchel (Vocals), Pat Marinelli (Guitars) & Mike Sabatini (Drums). Well, after all these years they still have their own style! Together with Halloween (US) & Wizard (Germany) they where the winning bands of the KIT festival!! |
AT VANCE - Chained (CD) (May 2005)
(Germany)
At Vance is a German band that was formed in 1998 by guitarplayer/mastermind Olaf Lenk. This guy is a very virtuos guitarplayer who has recorded many solo/projects and has been a member of metalbands like ´Velvet Viper´ and ´Center´. With At Vance, Olaf proves himself to be a creative and artistic bandleader. The band already did several tours with bands like: Rhapsody, Angeldust & Kamelot. I've seen this band live once and to be honest: i wasnt impressed at all! Well, after several line-up changes the band finally found a superb singer, Mats Leven, also known from his work with Yngwie Malmsteen. Mats sounds like a mix of Jorn Lande & David Coverdale. Wwwoowww, this is an incredible singer!! The total sound of At Vance is sounding much more grown-up than their earlier stuff. Later the band also replaced the bassplayer for John ABC Smith (ex-Gallow's Pole) and their drummer for Mark Cross (ex-Helloween, ex- Metalium). At Vance plays heavy metal in the vein of bands like (old) Pretty Maids and Masterplan. I really enjoyed listening to this album and i can advice everyone to listen to this album at least!! Good album!! |
AT WAR WITH SELF - Torn between Dimensions (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
At War With Self is the brainchild of guitarist / multi-instrumentalist Glenn Snelwar. " Torn Between Dimensions" , the band's debut recording features Glenn Snelwar on guitar, mandolin, and keyboards; Michael Manring on fretless bass and e-bow; and (Fates Warning's) Mark Zonder on drums and percussion. Zonder's solidly tasty drumming firmly anchors the trio along with the melodically propulsive bass work of Manring, all wonderfully adorned by Snelwar's fierce playing. |
BALATONIZER - Occlused in Ottusity (CD) (June 2005)
(Italy)
Balatonizer is a grindcore/deathmetalband from Palermo, Italy and was formed in 1997. In the beginning the band played pure grindcore but during the years, they also mixed it with a lot of deathmetal elements. This is the bands first full length album and it contains 32(!) songs and 1 videoclip (for the song 'Muscular Prevarication'). The band name bands like; Cannibal Corpse, Brutal Truth, Napalm Death, Vomitory, etc, as their main influences. This album contains a mix of grindcore/deathmetal that does not sound original but is performed very well. This is not really my kind of music and does also not belong to my target group but for the variation it is always funny to review this kind of bands. The band doesnt have any songtexts (like Obituary on their debut 'Slowly we Rot") but " the only semblance of message that we want to transmit is totally expressed in the wonderfull comic artwork, drawned by drummer Marco" according to their biography. Well, i have to admit; The artwork is faboulous!! Compliments! This album has a running time of nearly 30 minutes (not bad for 32 songs…).
If you're into grindcore with the already mentioned deathmetal parts, just check this band out. |
BATTLE RAM - Idem (CDemo) (June 2005)
(Italy) Italian True-Metalband Battle Ram started playing together at the end of the summer 2001 as
a coverband; in the beginning it was just for the fun of playing their favourite songs: mainingly U.S. Metal, NWOBHM and cult epic stuff, then they started writing their own material. In March 2003 they released their first demo cd. The self titled 5 tracks demo contains 4 Battle Ram songs and a Cirith Ungol's "Join The Legion" coversong. Battle Ram are writing new material for their first album at the moment. I already saw the band during their live performance at the Keep It True Warm-Up show in Germany (april 2004) and the band did impress me that time. The 4 songs on this Cdemo sound original and the band is blessed with some very good musicians. Only disadvantage is the Cirith Ungol cover because singer Daniele hasn't the throat & range for this song. This song can only be performed by Tim Baker himself..... |
BEEHLER - CDemo (2004)
(Canada)
BEEHLER, former drummer/singer Dan Beehler of the legendary EXCITER is back!!!!!
Together with his old Exciter bandmate Alan Johnson (bassguitar) and two new guitar players: Sean Brophy & Scott Walsh.
This demo is bringing back old memories. The new songs could have been on "Heavy Metal Maniac", Violence & Force" or even "Kill after Kill". Dan Beehler isn't screaming the way he did in his early days, but his drumsound is still fabulous!! |
BEFORE SILENCE - The screaming wolves (CDemo) (October 2005)
(Belgium)
Before Silence is a Belgium band that was formed in 2003 and the band name bands like; Evergrey, Symphony X, Stratovarius and Dream Theater as their main influences. This in the bands first demo and when i was looking at the nice lay-out and infosheet of the band i was already expecting a lot from these guys. Well, to be honest, i was a little bit disappointed because of 2 points; the moderate vocals & production. Musically it all sounds okay and the band do remind me to (especially) Evergrey. Personally i think that the band has the quality to become more wellknown but there is still a long way to go for them!! So my advice; take your time in writing new songs before going back to the studio and please rent a good producer so everything will sound more grown up. People that are into the bands i mentioned above should at least check out this band! |
BEFORE THE DAWN - 4:17 am (CD) (2004)
(Finland)
BTD was founded in the heat of the summer of 1999. Originally it started as a solo project of Tuomas. BTD is a band from Finland that plays dark melodic metal. To compare this band with another band is very difficult because the music sounds original. Sometimes i hear some (old) Paradise Lost/Tiamat influences in their music. This 3rd album sounds very well because of the great production!! The vocals are sometimes very "rough" but they also sound sometimes very "poppy". Normally i'm not into this kind of metal but i have to admit that i enjoyed listening to this album!! Great production & good musicians!! Fav. songs: "Heaven", "Dreamer" & "The Black". |
BELLAS, GEORGE - Venomous Fingers (CD) (2004)
(USA)
George Bellas is the name of an excellent guitarplayer that already recorded his first solo album (Turn of the Millennium) way back in 1996 on Shrapnel Records (Mike Varney). Shortly after signing to Shrapnel Records, George also joined UFO that was called MOGGWAY that days because of un-resolvable reasons/problems. George also recorded albums with: John West, Audiodrome, Ring of Fire, Magellan and lots more..... |
BESTIAL DEVASTATION - Sores, Blood & Pus (CD) (December 2004)
(Italy)
I've never been to much into grindcore and after listening to this CRAP i even begin to hate it!! |
BEYOND TWILIGHT - Section X (CD) (March 2005)
(Denmark/Sweden/USA)
Beyond Twilight was already formed in the early nineties under the name 'Twilight'. The band started as a project of keyboardplayer Finn Zierler and he released several albums under the name Twilight. Well, that is all history now as Finn from 1999 and forward put all his energy in this amazing band 'Beyond Twilight"!! Their debut album "Devils Hall of Fame" was already a classic album and is still visiting my CD-player regularly these days!! On the first album Jorn Lande (Ark, Masterplan, Millennium, etc) was singing. Everybody who knows me knows that i'm a very big Jorn Lande fan, so i was very curious about this album with substitute singer Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Outworld). Well, i can tell you that Kelly is doing his job great!! I'm not gonna say that he is better than Jorn Lande, to me they are equal!! They both fit perfect to the Beyond Twilight type of metal. The album was recorded at the end of 2004 and mixed by Finn Zierler & Tommy Hansen (Pretty Maids, Helloween). People who like/love the first Beyond Twilight album can buy this album blind!!! The only thing I miss is an European tour!!! |
BIOMECHANICAL - Eight Moons (CD) (2004)
(UK)
I discovered this band a few months ago during the Headway Prog festival (Amstelveen, The Netherlands). I was blown away by their stage performance!! Such an energy!! So i was very glad to receive their debut album! Despite of the moderate production, this album is superb!!!! Great songs that remind me sometimes to 80's bands like Hades or Vicious Rumors but with more progressive breaks in their songs. Unbelievable that this band is from the UK because nowadays "real" metal nearly died out overthere. Singer John K sounds like a cross between; Halford, Tate, LaBrie, Anselmo, and he is also the vocalist of BALANCE OF POWER these days! The songs contain some modern influences (sometimes) but these are not inconvenient. |
BIOMECHANICAL- The Empires of the World (June 2005)
(UK)
Yes!! Finally the new Biomechanical CD!! I was so f*ckin curious about this album after their great debut (see Archive Reviews) album!! This UK metalband signed to Earache records last year and this is their first album for this label. I was already blown away by the live energy during their Headway festival appearance in 2004 and their debutalbum "Eight Moons" but this new one beats everything!! Woowwww!! Singer John K. (ex-Balance of Power) is one of the best European singers these days; he has an enormous wide vocal range; high screaming vocals but also very agressive screams!! I agree by the bands words: " Biomechanical; a new British metalband that tread the perfect line between modern/extreme metal and classic heavy metal to devastating effect". "Biomechanical's lethal new style combines Judas Priest-style, twin guitar shredding with Pantera-esque stomp taking metal to dizzying new hights of complexity and brutality in the process". |
BLU INFINITO - The Futility Songs (Maxi CD) (March 2005)
(Italy)
The project Blu Infinito was born on February/March 2003 from the meeting between Davide Ciscì ( voice, guitar, keyboard and bass - in recording- )- and Giammarco Vacca (drums), but a true activity begins only on May of the same year. First target of the band was the recording of a demo, using the compound pieces from Davide during ' past activity with his precedent band.
After 4 months searching for members, Davide decided to keep up the band as a duo, with the help of some session musicians. So the band continued and finished the composition of 4 songs, and on December began the recording sessions of "The Futility Songs", ep with 3 tracks (about 20 mins of music) recorded between December 2003 and January 2004. |
BOLTTHROWER - Those Once Loyal (CD) (November 2005)
(UK)
BOLT THROWER were formed at a punk gig in a Coventry pub in 1986, following a conversation between friends guitarist Barry Thomson and bassist Gavin Ward. Inspired at that time by bands such as Sacrilege, Discharge, Candlemass & Slayer, they decided to form a band that was heavy, aggressive, but more importantly, original. They were soon joined by Alan West, a friend of Baz's, who took the role of vocalist/lyricist . When it came to finding a drummer, Andy Whale was suggested by a mutual friend, and when he met up with the rest of the band to try out, he found he had similar music tastes, and joined immediately. |
BOOMERANG - Weave World (CD) (2003)
(Germany)
Boomerang is 5 piece band from Frankenthal, Germany. This is the bands first "real" longplayer after their 1999 demo " The real unreal". The cover/booklet of the CD looks very good with great artwork of Dominic Harman. The first song, "Mourning Sun", starts fast and agressive. It strikes me that the musicians are all doing well in the vein of bands like Blind Guardian, Iron Savior and even Gamma Ray. The only complain is the quality of their singer Axel Johann. He's not bad at all but he has a strange accent that a lot of german singers have. There's a lot of variety on this album, so if you like the bands i mentioned above you can buy this album blindly!!! |
BULLDOZER BREED - Promo 2005 (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Bulldozer Breed was founded in 2004 in Deurne, The Netherlands. This is the bands first (4 track) demo.
The members of the band all have a lot of experience because they already played in bands like Elegy, RatCom, Imitallica & Chronic Noise. The band subscibes their music as "loud, mean, fast & dirty".
The production of this CD is very good for a demo. Musically it all sounds nice and to me it sounds like a mix of bands as; Sonic Violence, Kreator & Wargasm but all with an industrial touch. Not really my kind of metal but i can appreciate this band! If you like the bands i mentioned above; you should check them out live; they are worth a visit!
|
BUZZKILLER - Hateful Intentions (CD) (2004)
(USA) Never heard of this band?? Well, that will change very soon! Buzzkiller is a project of ARCHETYPE singer Greg Wagner. If you expect something in the vein of Archetype then you're totally wrong. Greg put this project together with Craig Schwartz (guitar) and Mike Harris (Drums). I had to listen to this CD for a several times before i liked it, but are that normally not the best albums? All kind of technical highlights are put in the songs with the incredible voice of Greg Wagner as a special. To me, Greg is one of the best singers at this moment in Metal music. Thats probably also one of the reasons that he was asked to join the Judas Priest coverband (British Steel) when "Ripper" Owens stepped out to join the original Judas Priest. To compare this band with another band is impossible. They play a very unique style of music that you should listen to! Favorite songs on the CD are: Evil Conception, Murder & Hells Road. You can order the album directly by sending 15 $ (Incl. postage & handling) to: Mr. Greg Wagner, 312 East High Rear, Apt. # 8, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663. |
BUZZKILLER- II (CD) (2004)
(USA)
I just add CD reviews to my website for about 1 year at this moment. Funny, here's already the second Buzzkiller CD, a project of ex-Archetype singer & workaholic Greg Wagner. A workaholic?? Yes, a real one!! After his unrespectful departure (see Guestbook) from Archetype he has not sit down for a moment!! When Greg sended me this album he also added some CD-R's from his other bands/projects: Concussion, Public Outcry and Digital Nerve. Beside these projects he is also the singer of US Cultband BREAKER!! |
BYFIST - Adrenalin (CD) (2003)
(USA)
BYFIST
is a band formed by a few Ex- REVEREND members. The line-up: Vikk Real (Vox), Davey Lee (Lead guitar), Jess Vara (Drums), Notch Vara (Guitar) and Rey Gone (Bass). This EP contains four songs that are is the same vein as the older Reverend stuff. The production and engineering of this EP are done by David Wayne (Ex- Metal Church) and Joe Floyd (Warrior). Nevertheless its all good traditional (speed/heavy) metal but far from original. I've heard it all before….. Fav. Song: Eternal Damnation |
CAFFERY, CHRIS - Faces (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Chris Caffery? Yes, the worcaholic that gave his contributions to lots of bands and projects such as: CIRCLE II CIRCLE, DOCTER BUTCHER, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA and not to forget SAVATAGE! He joined Savatage already at the age of 19. Accompanied by a serie of ups & downs, leaving Savatage twice, he finally got together with the band permanently in 1995. |
CEREMONY OF OPPOSITES - The Fear Within (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
In the late summer of 2003 Pascal, As and Marcel decided to start a band. At first the plan was to make "Gothic Metal", though soon it turned out this wasn't wat they all wanted. After many changes within the band they came to the way it is now. At the end of 2004 they decided to ask their drummer to leave the band, because of differences in style, and because they thought it didn't work out the way things went. In may 2005 they found a new drummer, Sander, which resulted in the fact that the band is finally complete again. |
COENEN, MARCEL - Guitartalk (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
Marcel Coenen IS the best guitarplayer in the Netherlands. Marcel started to play guitar at the age of 11. In 1998 he already won the "best rock guitarplayer" contest in the Netherlands! After playing in several bands like SPEEDICA (later FORM) and LEMUR VOICE, he nowadays plays in the best dutch progrock band SUN CAGED. This CD is fully instrumental and reminds me to guitargods like: Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert & Marty Friedman. One of the highlights of this CD is the guitarversion of the "Dutch National Anthem". This song he also used when he won the guitarplayer contest in 1998. |
CONFESSOR - Unraveled (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
"CONFESSOR made its mark on the underground metal scene in the late 80's by combining some of the genre's essential elements in a way that no band had attempted yet, and that few, if any have successfully blended since. Once dubbed "the world's most obstinately technical metal band", CONFESSOR never failed to bewilder their fans with ability to follow huge gut-wrenching guitar harmonies and wailing vocals with intricately woven riffs that could not be assigned time signatures. The band stood alone on an island it had created in a sea of redundant, cookie cutter metal bands until putting their instruments down in 1994" according their biography. Better way to subscribe their music is difficult just like the music of Confessor self. |
CONQUEST OF STEEL - Idem (CD) (May 2005)
(United Kingdom)
Conquest of Steel?? I've seen this band lately at a local pub in Tilburg, The Netherlands where they played one of their overseas gigs during a small tour (together with Scavenger from Ireland). After contacting the band they sended me their latest release. Conquest of Steel plays traditional heavy metal (True Metal) with lots of NWOBHM influences! After listening to this album i have to admit that i'm a bit disappointed about it. On stage the band looked quite professional but on the album it all sounds very moderate. Also the production of the album sounds very cheap and i think the band could have done it much much better!!! Pitty, because they proved to be a good band ON stage. So guys, next time you've to spend more time on the songs and rent a good recording studio!! Just listen to the tracks on their website and order the CD if you like it. Conclusion: ON stage this band rocks but on vinyl/CD it could have all sound more professional! So if you get the chance to see them alive; just check it out!! |
CONTRADICTION - The voice of hatred (CD) (September 2005)
(Germany)
This German band from Wuppertal was formed around 1989. After several demo's the band released their debut album "All we hate" in 1996. Later they had some label- and line-up changes and finally the band signed with Armageddon Music.
This CD contains 11 songs with a direct sound somewhere between thrashmetal and metalcore. The album is produced very well and the songs have a lot of variety. The music sounds like a mix of bands like Pantera, Pro Pain and sometimes even Madball. If you're into this kind of metal/core you want be disappointed with this band/album!!
The bands own description sounds: "Grooving, sweat breaking, brachial brutality but at the same time sometimes melancholic German metal". I agree with this!!! Check them out! |
CROSSBOW - Priestkiller (7") (2003)
(Sweden)
Crossbow is a band from Southern Sweden and was formed in 2001 by members of Autopsy Torment , Pagan Rites, etc.
They are labelmates of the Czech band Puls and also released these songs on 7" vinyl. |
CRUSTACEAN - Insaniac (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
The second album of this dutch trashmetal band sounds much more grown-up than there debut album "Burden of our suffering". The songs are heavier, completer and blessed with a good production. The artwork is also great (made by their former guitarplayer Richard Schouten). In my opinion they have even developed an own style. On the debut album they did sound like Slayer (not strange if you know that most of the bandmembers are also in a Slayer- Coverband). Keep up this great work guys!
It would be important to support a great headliner in the future so the audience will know who Crustacean are! I dont have any fav. songs, they are all very good and full speed! |
CRYONIC TEMPLE - Blood, Guts & Glory (CD) (2004)
(Sweden)
The Swedish powermetal band Cryonic Temple deliver a very good album with their second longplayer, "Blood, Guts & Glory". All the songs on this CD are composed very well. If you like bands in the vein of Helloween and Manowar with a singer who reminds me of Klaus Meine (Scorpions) or even Steve Grimmet (Grim Reaper) than you have to listen to this album immediately! The album is produced very well and the songs are all fast but do not sound like the other, so you'll stay hooked. To me this the best album Limb Music Productions released during the last months. |
CRYSTAL EMPIRE - Lord of Illusions (CD) (October 2005)
(Italy)
The story of Crystal Empire began in the year 2000, when a talented guitar player named Mat Devecchi joined forces with a newborn but promising band called Nemesi. After a year spent playing coversongs in numerous live gigs, the band embraced the idea of writing original songs in order to prepare a demo tape. Soon Mat and Emanuele, the experienced keyboardwizard of the band, started laying down riffs and melodies, and after some months of hard work the two found themselves with five long and complex tunes of progressive powermetal, that were later enriched with some crushing drum patterns created by the band's drummer Matteo Avanzo. The songs were ready, but some serious line up problems led the band to postpone the recording of their debut demo cd.
After several line-up changes the band started recording the CD at Mat's Ivory Gate Studios, entering then the Rock Hattle Studios with producer Albino Barbero in order to put the final touches on the product. After two weeks of blood, sweat and tears, the band finally could hold in their hands the result of years of sacrifices: "Lord ofI llusions" had become reality. |
DAN LORENZO - Nice Being Alone (CD) (March 2005)
(USA)
Dan Lorenzo was (and still is) the guitarplayer for the legendary Hades from New Jersey, USA! Together with Alan Tecchio (one of my alltime fav. singers) he formed Non Fiction after Hades was disbanded. Well, Non Fiction was the first band i was thinking of when i was listening to this second solo album of Dan Lorenzo. Songs like 'My Level' and 'Nothing" could have been on any Non Fiction album. The only big difference is that the vocals on this CD are done by several singers but none by Alan Tecchio!! The best song on this album is 'Too Fast for Hate' with guestvocals from Bobby "Blitz" Elsworth (Overkill). Dan uses a lot of guestmusician on this album and has composed several very good songs but also some very weak songs. Personally i prefer his Hades/Non Fiction stuff. Still i'm looking out to see this guy alive once again with this band because after all he IS a very good musician!! |
D.A.R.K. - Dumbass Roadkill (CD) (January 2005)
(Sweden)
D.A.R.K. is a band from Sweden that did me send this 2-song CD. Difficult to review a band like D.A.R.K. by only 2 songs but i'll try to give my opinion about it; The band started in 2003 and wanted to play a mix of Hiphop, Hardrock, Techno and Blues. They have some hit-potential but to be honest; it's not my kind of music!!! It's not bad at all and i think the band has the possibility to become "famous". The 2 songs remind me sometimes to the Anthrax during their Indian finery & 'NOT' bullshit. To compare the band with any other band is very difficult because i normally don't listen to this kind of music. If you're interested, you can always visit their website and download some of their songs. |
DARKEST HOUR - Undoing Ruin (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
The band formed in Washington DC in 1998, playing hardcore shows and releasing two split 7" records and a CD EP before dropping The Mark of the Judas in 2000 and receiving great notice from the underground press. Victory Records quickly signed Darkest Hour in the wake of the excitement. Their first album for the label, "So Sedated, So Secure" came out in 2001 to critical raves. In 2003, Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation kicked their profile up decidedly. |
DARKNESS ETERNAL - Satanchrist (CD) (2004)
(Canada)
Darkness Eternal is a one-man project by a Canadian guy called: George Velaetis. He's playing all the instruments by himself and also takes care of the vocals (read: grunts). But this is not all; even the production & mixing is done by himself (with the help of Stew Kirkwood). Well, after listening to the album, I can tell you that producing is not his speciality........It's not sounding bad but it reminds me to a lot of older deathmetal demo's I own. To my opinion, it's not necessary these days to have such bad productions! The music nevertheless is sounding nice eventhough it's not original at all. I hear some influences from the older Possessed, Brutal Truth and even some Six Feet Under. A lot of die-hard black/deathmetal fans will worship this kind of music/bands but to me it sounds to standard. |
DARK NOVA - Sivilla (CD) (May 2005)
(Greece)
This band was already formed way back in 1987 under the name 'Dark Devils'. In 1991 they already recorded their debut album "The Dark Rhapsodies" and this one was released on Molon Lave Records. The incapability of this label to support the album efficiently and release it on CD deprived the band of a firther recognition. The band had several line-up changes during all these years. In 1999 they released their second album "1999..a step beyond....." and this one was released by Seven Records. Finally the band signed with Black Lotus Records and this is their first album on this label. The band plays heavy-power metal and they are not doing this bad at all!! But what else can you expect when a band exist for nearly 18 years?? Singer Michael Choulakis has a nice, clean voice which reminds me sometimes to Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass). Dark Nova also has 2 women in their ranks; Kiki Lara on bass and Mary Tassouli on keyboards. The band is completed with Elias Koskoris (guitar) and Nick Adams on drums. The production of this album is moderate and i think that it had sounded much better with a cleaner, more powerfull production. Pitty about that but still its a good album for people who like pure Heavy Metal with sometimes a few prog-elements. |
DAVID NEIL CLINE BAND - Demo 2003 (CDemo) (2003)
(USA)
David Neil Cline is an US singer/guitarplayer that already released several albums. To me, it was my first acquaintance with this multi talented musician. David did send me his latest promo (CDemo) together with 2 of his full length albums (Thorough Scrutiny, Malefic Influence). Because the promo is his latest release, i will only review this one. David is a very good guitarplayer and a reasonable singer too. The music is a mix of some older rock music with some (later) metal influences. To compare this music with other bands is very difficult; i hear some NWOBHM influences but also some later US rockband melodies back in his songs. Think about bands like; Tygers of Pan Tang, Santers and even some Deep Purple (maybe because of the keyboard parts). This is music for people that are at least 35 years or older (just like me, haha). Conclusion: Good music, not sensational, but all performed very well. It also pleased me that the demo stuff is much heavier than his earlier music. If you're curious about his music: |
DAVID VALDES - Paradise Lost (CD) (December 2005)
(Spain)
David Valdes was born in the city of Malaga (Spain) and later moved to Tarragona. At the age of 13, David was able to discover what serious its passion, that was to play the guitar. David obtains his first amplifying and electrical guitar to the 14 years, at that time the music that attracted him was death metal and thrash, mounting its first band of death metal called WITCH. In the following years David discovers the magic of Yngwie Malmsteen, Marty Friedman & Jason Becker and its influences of J.S.Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin. That made him change his style radically, next and putting each time but in this guitarristic style, discovers two essential videos of education for its race like guitarist which they were Vinnie Moore and Paul Gilbert, being become fond of thus to the style shred. His first disc "Paradise Lost" consists 11 songs composed with its own means and resources. With a computer he was able to incorporate all the other nonexistent instruments: drums, bass, keyboards, etc..
This fully instrumental CD suits me very well. The comparison with guitargods like Vinnie Moore & Marty Friedman is good audible. David Valdes has delivered a very good solo album that will be loved by every fan of guitar shredding!! This is again, after Porty's solo album, a great instrumental album from out of Spain! Pitty David did send me a copy of the CD with only 6 songs out of 11!! So if you're into guitar-terror in the vein of Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Joey Tafolla, Martry Friedman & Jason Becker; you should check out this guy!

DECEIVER - Idem (MCD) (2004)
(Sweden)
DECEIVER was formed in January 2004 by Ex-Maze of Torment / Xenofanes members. The main goal of the band is to play music in the vein of their heroes: Motorhead, Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, Venom, etc. Deceiver is NOT a rip-off band but they do (offcourse) have lots of influences. The band describe their music as "Thrashing Heavy Metal". The CD is produced in May this year with Tommy Tagtgren as producer. |
DECEIVER - Riding with the Reaper (CD) (October 2005)
(Sweden)
I already reviewed this bands mini CD a while ago and i liked their 80's influenced thrashmetal. Well this is the bands first full length album and it is, again, produced by Tommy Tagtren.
This CD is a logical follow up to their debut CD and musically its on the same level. I still hear a lot of Celtic Frost, Motorhead, Venom, Destruction, Kreator and other 80's elements back in their songs while i hoped to hear some more original, own created, songs on this new album. |
DECREPIT BIRTH - ......And time begins (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Decrepit Birth is influenced by the typical 90's US deathmetal bands. Not that strange if you know that they have ex-Hate Eternal / ex-Dying Fetus members in their ranks. This is the bands first full length album and it's blasting from the beginning till the end!! So don't expect any ballads! If you're into bands like Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, Vader or also their labelmates Spawn of Possession, you should order this extreme deathmetal album immediately! Hope to see these guys on tour soon!! |
DE MAN MET DE SNOR - Ontwaakt (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
De Man met de Snor (translated in English; The Man with the Moustache) exist since 1999 and they play a mix of industrial, electro & darkwave. Their songs are all in the Dutch language which sounds very original for this kind of music. Personally i dont like industrial music at all so its impossible for me to give this demo a honest review. They name bands like NIN, Rammstein & Laibach as their main influences. To me it sounds crap! Not my kind of stuff but if you're still interested,
|
DESTRUCTION - Inventor of evil (CD) (September 2005)
(Germany)
What to tell about Destruction?? This band is one of the best (European) thrashmetal bands for years now and I've been following this band for a long time! Together with Kreator and Sodom they are the founders of a superb thrash sound that is recognizable for a lot of thrashbands worldwide!
Singer Schmier still has his typical little screams/yells and the band still hates to play any ballad. A few years ago (1999) the band released the album "All hell breaks loose" after a silence of many years and they showed again that they still belong to the top of the European thrash scene!
Following trends was never important to Destruction. Personally I was not really impressed by their "The Antichrist" album a few years ago but this new album kicks your butt again!! Very important is the input of drummer Marc who joined the band at their latest record "Metal Discharge". This guy is a real asset to the band! The album has a fresh and new sound and features classic thrashsongs which are produced and mixed by Peter Tagtren (Hypocrisy). Beware for this new album; it will blow you away!!! Superb!!! |
DIGGETH - One more yesterday (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
February 2003, The international successful metal band Wicked Mystic disbands after 10 years of recording and touring, leaving a legacy of 3 critically acclaimed but nowadays hard to find albums .
In the second half of 2003 Harald te Grotenhuis (former WM) meets Benjamin Kip, drummer, at the time 19 years old and just on its way of recovering from a psychical illness. He persuades Harald to jam with him.
January 2004, Benjamin & Harald rehearse and jam on a weekly basis and they create a style of blues, metal and southern rock.
March 2004, the band, now named Diggeth enter the stage after recruiting ex-Wicked Mystic bass player Alco Emaus. They decide to act as a trio from now on. The music of Diggeth is not comparible with Wicked Mystic at all.
The lay-out & production of this CDemo are both great but personally i'm not excited about their musical direction. If you like the music-mix I named above, than check out this band. If you like bands like Black Label Society, you'll probably like this band. Sorry guys but this is not devoted to me…….

DIGITAL NERVE - Digital Nerve (CDemo) (2004)
(USA)
Greg Wagner......when you read my reviews regular, you will already know this name. Greg (ex-ARCHETYPE, BUZZKILLER, BREAKER) is a real workaholic and i'm glad with that because he's a great musician!! Digital Nerve is also one of his bands/projects and to be honest; it's one of his best bands!! I prefer the Buzzkiller stuff but this sounds great too! It's more agressive and to me it's incredible that this band still has no recordlabel. Great songs with lost of breaks, heavy guitar riffs and rough & screaming vocals! These days every band thinks they are progressive....well this band is! Every progrock fan should have this stuff! Greg is working on his own website but till that's finished you can always contact him at this adress: Mr. Greg Wagner, 312 East High Rear, Apt. # 8, New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663, USA. |
DISSECTION - Maha Kali (CD) (January 2005)
(Sweden)
"The Rebirth of Dissection" is printed on the front cover of this 2-track CD. After years of absence (the singer has been in jail for several years) the band indeed "rebirths" with this CD. I'm not acquainted with their earlier stuff, i only know that the band has a high status in the Blackmetal scene. |
DISTRAUGHT - Behind the Veil (CD) (August 2005)
(Brasil)
This band already send me 2 albums earlier, about 3 or 4 years ago in a time that i was not even doing any reviews! I liked both albums but they where not blessed with a good production. Well, this album sounds a lot better but still has a moderate production. Pitty, because the Thrash/Deathmetal of this band sounds very good and professional! |
DIVISION - Trinity (CD) (December 2004)
(USA)
Divison is a progressive metalband from Annandale VA, USA and exist since 1993 (first under the name: Visionary).
Well to be right away: this labum is GREAT!! This is metal the way it should be played; great compositions, lots of breaks, great musicians & a good production!! To compare their music is very difficult because they sound very original (and thats difficult nowadays!). Bands they sometimes remind me off: (old) Iced Earth and Control Denied (The band name Chuck Shuldiner as one of their biggest inspirations). The band has a great ritme-section with drummer EJ Ripple & bassplayer Dan Plunkett (Ron Kralik has officially been announced to replace Dan as the new bassist for Division because Dan is suffering from a medical condition that has made it very painful and nearly impossible for him to play bass.) and owns 2 great guitarplayers; Mike Blevins & Matt Crooks. Singer Nick Kelly has a powerfull but raw voice that fits good to the music. The album only contains good/great songs. So if you're into real US-progmetal, you should buy this album!! I love it!! Division is currently in the studio working on the follow up to "Trinity". The working title of the album is "Articles of Faith" and it will have 14 tracks. The album should be out early in 2005. |
DOGPOUND - The Hellbum (CD) (2004)
(Sweden)
When i first looked at the booklet of this CD i was expecting some hardcore/crossover band. After listening to the album i was totally surprised by the music style of this band! Progressive rock/metal that sounds very commercial from time to time. The band was founded already in 1999 when 3 classmates stick their ideas together. This is their first release for Lion Music and i hope it will not be their last! I really enjoyed listening to this album; good musicians, great songs & a superb production! To compare this band with another band is very difficult but if you' re into rockmusic with "poppy" influences than you should listen to this album!! |
DOL AMMAD - Star Tales (CD) (May 2005)
(Greece)
Dol Ammad is the brainchild of composer-keyboardplayer Thanasis Lightbridge who formed this band way back in 2000. This band already released 2 demos in 2001 & 2002 which both got great reviews!! At the end of 2003, beginning of 2004, the band arranged & produced this debutalbum for Black Lotus Records with the inclusion of drummer Alex Holzwarth (Sieges Even, Rhapsody). The drum recordings took place in Germany and the rest of the recordings, mixing and mastering took place in Thanasis personal studio in Greece. The vocal parts on this album are done by a 12-piece classical choir consisting of members of one of Greece's best youth choirs. The band describes the music as 'Electronic Art Metal'. The album features 12 tracks of operatic & progressive fanatasy metal. To compare this band with any other is very difficult because of their unique style. The music is sounding very original but i doubt if there are enough fans of this kind of ´Metal`. If you´re looking for something new, refreshing, just listen to this album and judge it by yourself.......... |
DRAGONIA - Resurrection (Mini-CD) (August 2005)
(Italy)
Dragonia already exist since 1995 but then under another bandname 'Evil Zone'. After a short time the band disbanded and everyone tried to carrie out his own career. Later, in 2002, the band reformed with a different line-up and decided to change the bandname into 'Dragonia'.
After, again, several line-up changes, the bandleader Massimo Menichetti (sounds like the Italian version of Meniketti; Y&T???) decided to take the leadvocals also to himself, together with playing guitar. |
DRAGONLORD - Black Wings of Destiny (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
Born from the mind of the founding Testament guitarist Eric Peterson in 2001, DRAGONLORD's debut ("Rapture") already drew astounding praise from all corners and demonstrated Peterson's deep commitment to exploring his darker musical passions.
This newest album proves to be even sharper and more fully-realized version of DRAGONLORD; sonically deeper and with greater nuanced detail than ever before. A contributing factor may be that Peterson gave more space to his co-conspirators now that the band has taken full flight. Drummer Jon Allen and guitarist Steve Smyth (Nevermore, Testament) have returned, and Peterson has recruited Derek Ramirez (who performed with Testament on the Demonic record) to properly fill the bass position (following the departure of legendary journeyman Steve DiGiorgio). Also present once again is keyboardist Lyle Livingston. |
DRONE 24-7 - Blooddrugssexmoney (CD) (2004)
(Germany)
Drone 24-7 is a German band that asked me to review their album. Why?? I really don't know because when they had looked at my Metal interest they could have noticed that i'm not interested in this kind of "Metal"!!! To me this is totally crap!! I'm not interested in this kind of 'Marilyn Manson' ripp-of music!! |
DUNGEON - One Step Beyond (CD) (April 2005)
(Australia)
Dungeon is an Australian band that was formed already in 1989 by vocalist "Lord" Tim Grose. The band name bands like; Helloween, Dokken, Slayer, Judas Priest & Soilwork as their main influences. They already released several albums and did some tours in Australia & Japan. This is the bands 5th album (they also have 1 DVD) and their second on Limb Music Productions. With this album and their deal with LMP, the band tries to conquer Europe. I'm curious if they wil make it overhere in Europe? The music is very nice and the musicians are all excellent but to me it all sounds not that original and i think the band will not jump out of the mass of releases of bands overhere. Their music will be popular in a country like Germany where they adore powermetal with Helloween influences. So i think they should make Germany their main goal. Conclusion: Nice album, good musicians, good production & very nice lay-out but to my opninion not original enough to make it overhere in Europe. |
EARTH - Star Condemn'd (CD) (2004)
(Australia)
EARTH is an Australian band that was formed back in 1998 and they had only one goal: Create Swedisch sounding deathmetal! The band already recorded this album in 1999 but due to economical problems with the label, the album hasnt been released....until now!! |
EDDIE OJEDA - Axes 2 Axes (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
Eddie Ojeda is best known for all the years he has spent as the lead guitarist for Twisted Sister.
This is Eddie Ojeda´s first solo album. On this album Eddie uses a lot of special guests: Ronny James Dio, Dee Snider, Joe Lynn Turner, Rudy Sarzo, Chris MacCarvill, Joe Franco, Terry Ilous!! An all-star metal team! |
ELDRITCH - Portrait of the Abyss within (CD) (December 2004)
(Italy)
Eldritch is an Italian band that was formed in 1991. The band played that days music in the vein of bands like Queensryche & Fates Warning with some thrash elements. The band already signed to Limb Music Productions in 1993. Their debut album "Seeds of Rage" (1995) was already 'Record of the Month' in the German "Heavy oder Wass?" magazine. In 1998 Eldritch already released their 3th album which has influences from bands like Coroner & Annihilator. As far as i know, this is the bands 5th album and it can be described as music where the balance between agressive & progressive parts is mixed perfect!! There are also some songs that have a high sing-a-long level but these are not irritating at all. The musicians are all doing their job great and they have wrote some incredible prog-songs!! If you're into progmetal with sometimes 'catchy' parts , you should listen to this album. Another great band from Italy!!! |
ELWING - War (CD) (September 2005)
(Greece)
In 2000 this band was formed under the name 'Merlin'. After a few line-up changes they also changed their bandname into 'Elwing'. The band already released their debutalbum "Immortal Stories" in 2001 and this one got lots of good reviews worldwide. This is the bands second album but their first on Black Lotus Records.
Elwing plays epic/powermetal with a lot of agressive riffing, melodic solos, choir vocals and they managed to write a damn good album!! |
EMINENCE - Humanology (CD) (2004)
(Brasil)
Woowwww, this is brutal!! I was surprised after the intro-music ended!! These guys know how to play DEATH metal!! Brasil is a supplier for good thrash/deathmetal bands for years already and i receive regular some good stuff from overthere. |
ETERNAL NEMESIS - Eternal nemesis (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
The development of Eternal Nemesis began in Spring of 2004 in the city of Riverside, California with lead guitarist and founder of Eternal Nemesis, Vic Herbilla. Vic wanted to recruit 4 new musicians to spread heavy metal to the masses, starting with promising guitarist John Knowles.
Al "Mayhem" Mendez, a veteran of the metal scene (Mad Whip Thunder, The Dark Angel Reunion, Dreams of Damnation, Pagan War Machine, Scarred) was introduced into the band by a touch of fate, one night during a show by none other than the metal mastermind himself, Ronnie James Dio. Eternal Nemesis was closely coming to completion. Bassist Joe Harris, a former band member of Vic, came into the band shortly after Al Mayhem decided to join. Joe and Vic were band mates in a local cover band. Eternal Nemesis was in need of a bass player with the chops and the attack to match its arsenal, and decided to call on Joe to fulfill the bassist position. The final piece to complete Eternal Nemesis was still at hand. Eternal Nemesis did not want to settle for any type of vocalist. They had an ideal picture of what they wanted to be beneficially suitable for the music and style, and when vocalist Evan Richards made his way into the picture, Eternal Nemesis could not think of finding someone else more suitable for the job. The band was now completed. |
ETERNAL REIGN - Forbidden Path (CD) (June 2005)
(Germany)
Eternal Reign already exist since 1997 under the name ' Perfect Crime'. After releasing 2 demos the band released their first CD "Crimes of Passion" in 2002. Shortly before the release the band was forced for legal reasons to change their bandname into ' Eternal Reign'. Last year the band played at the Headbangers Open Air festival and i had the luck to see them overthere. On stage the band already impressed me a lot so i was very curious of their new album! Well, they didnt disappoint met at all! 'Forbidden Path' fulfilled my expactations.
The band plays melodic powermetal with a touch of the US-style and also some progressive elements. Last song on this album is a coversong (' ten seconds in' ) from US-cultmetalband Breaker.
If you like US bands like: Riot, Jag Panzer, you should check out this band!! GREAT album!!! |
ETERNITY BLACK - CDemo (May 2005)
(USA)
Eternity Black is a band from Houston, Texas, USA that was formed only a few years ago. The band has 3 ex-Helstar members (Larry Baragan, Rob Trevino, Russell Deleon) in their ranks but dont expect anything like that!! The music of Eternity Black is sounding very agressive and also very modern and makes me think of bands like Pantera and/or MachineHead. This is because singer Ryan McKnight has a very raw, energetic throat which suits good to the music. It all is sounding very professional and i think this band has lots of potential to become a wellknown metalband. Personally its not really my kind of Metal but i have to admit that they are doing their jobs great!! It want take long before this band gets signed by a good label!! Just check out their website and listen to their music |
EUROFORCE - Euroforce (CD) (September 2005)
(Greece)
EUROFORCE is the cooperation of 2 music masterminds. Vocalist Jiotis Parcharidis (Human Fortress, HydroToxin) and Greek guitar wizard Theodore Ziras (Solo Artist, Ice Divine, Guardian Angel). EUROFORCE rhythm section consists of two top players in Athens, Spyros Kasabakalis (Drums) and John Kostis (Bass).
The band was formed in 2003 and after 2 years of exhausting rehearsals and pre-production their debut self-titled CD is ready to give a new breath to the Progressive Neoclassical Genre. |
EXCALION - Primal exhale (CD) (September 2005)
(Finland)
Excalion was formed in December 2000 in central Finland by keyboardplayer Jarmo Myllyvirta. This guy wrote some melodic powermetal songs and began looking for bandmembers to realize his ideas. |
FLESH MADE SIN - Dawn of the Stillborn (CD) (May 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Flesh Made Sin is a band from my hometown Tilburg and exist since 1999. I already reviewed their mini-album a while ago and i was very positive about that one! The band plays fantastic thrash/deathmetal in the vein of bands like: Infernal Majesty, Kreator and Slayer. Singer Twan van Geel reminds me a lot to Mille from Kreator (in his early days) and also to Schmier from Destruction. After this you can conclude that it all is not sounding very original but who gives a f*ck?? Not me!! The CD only contains fast songs but isn't boring at all because there is still a lot of variety between the compositions. The album is produced very well and has a very nice lay-ouut. FMS has everything to become a big act and i hope they will go on in this musical direction!! Great album!!! |
FLESH MADE SIN - Masterwork in Blood (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
FLESH MADE SIN was formed during the summer of 1999 by guitarist Bjorn and guitarist/vocalist Twan. Soon bass player Marc (Stip) and drummer Marco were added to the line-up and a complete band was born. |
FORCE OF EVIL - Black Empire (CD) (April 2005)
(Denmark)
Force of Evil is a 5-piece Heavy Metal band formed by legendary twin guitars of Mercyful Fate: Michael Denner and Hank Shermann. They have joined forces with: Hal Patino, Bjarne T. Holm, and Martin Steene.
All known for their performance with King Diamond, Mercyful Fate and Ironfire.
The bands style of music is classic metal topped with sinister and screaming vocals. |
FORETOLD - Idem (CDemo) (March 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Foretold is a band from Tilburg, The Netherlands. Foretold was founded in 1999 by Kim Sloothaak (drums), Harrie van Erp (guitars) and Mathijs Ansems (bass). They went through several name changes before settling as In Gods Hell at first. After several line-up changes, early 2004 the line-up was finally completed as they found a vocalist in William Nijhof. After some disscussion they decided to change the band name into Foretold. |
FORSAKEN - Anima Mundi (CD) (2004)
(Malta)
There are a few bands with the name FORSAKEN. Well, this is the Malta version. Malta?? Yes, the small island in the Mediterranean Sea!! I've seen this band during their performance last month at the Headbangers Open Air festival in Germany and i was surprised! The band name Candlemass as one of their main influences but to me it sounds more like a mix of Candlemass & Solitude Aeturnus. Personally i never liked Candlemass because of the boring vocals and thats why i prefer this band much, much more. The vocals on this album remind me to the older Solitude Aeturnus stuff and i even hear some St. Vitus back in it. |
G.A.G.ORDER 13 - Idem (CDemo) (March 2005)
(USA)
G.A.G.ORDER 13 is a project of ex-Tyrant's Reign drummer Gabriel Anthony. When this guy contacted me about his own project i was, offcourse, very curious because i love bands like Tyrant's Reign! Well, after listening to this Ep i was a bit disappointed.........Not that it's bad, it all sounds good but it has nothing to do with the legendary Tyrant's Reign. |
GAINES, STEVE - Anger as Art (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Steve Gaines is already the frontman for bands like; ABATTOIR, BLOODLUST, DREAMS OF DAMNATION & PAGAN WAR MACHINE.
Funny that he still has some time left to record his (first) solo album!! He's also very bussy at the moment with the new albums of Abattoir & Dreams of Damnation but he wanted to fill the gaps until these two are released. What to expect from this album?? Well, Steve is doing what he is good in; screaming & yelling and playing some very aggresive metal with sometimes even hardcore influences (for example the first song 'Attitude Adjustment'). To compare this album with his other stuff is very difficult; to me it sounds most like Bloodlust (i'm not acquainted with the Dreams of Damnation stuff yet). It's more aggresive than Abattoir and less aggresive than the Pagan War Machine stuff. Most striking on the CD is the fact that Steve is playing ALL the instruments himself!! And he's doing that job very good!! GREAT album!!! Can't wait for the new Abattoir & PWM stuff!! |
GHOST MACHINERY - Haunting Remains (CD) (January 2005)
(Finland)
Ghost Machinery is a neo-classical powermetalband from Finland. Singer/guitarplayer Pete Ahonen is also one of the leading man behind the band Burning Point. Pete Ahonen formed the band in 2002. He asked Tapsa Pelkonen (bass) and Jussi Ontera (drums/keyboards), both from a band called Wildcard, to join the band and they both accepted the invitation. In 2003 they recorded a 5 track promo CD to show their music to some labels. Sound Riot from Brasil was the first label chosen by them. This first full-length album was recorded from december 2003 to march 2004. |
GIANLUCA GALLI - Back Home (CD) (November 2005)
(Italy)
Gianluca Galli is an Italian guitarplayer who did a study in classical music through jazz to rock. This is his second solo album (according the biography). Personally he reminds me to a weak version of Joe Satriani. He sometimes sounds like Joe Satriani but he misses the variation in his songwriting. I prefer his other band Mantra because this band has at least a good singer in their ranks. So to be honest…..technically not a bad album at all but after 4 or 5 songs i had the feeling i heard it all before and got bored. Maybe guitarfreaks will adore this album. |
GIRLSCHOOL - Believe (CD) (October 2005)
(UK)
Girlschool, one of the first (or maybe THE first) female NWOBHM band, send me their latest CD after the interview MMM did with the band (see Archive Interviews). I know the band already for years but i saw the band for the first time during their 1999 Wacken Open Air performance and to be honest; they didnt impress me that time on stage at all!! The same goes for the Schwung Festival (Belgium) appearance in 2003. Last year i heard a lot of positive reactions about their new CD so i was very curious about this one! |
GOAT HORN - Threatening Force (mini-CD) (December 2005)
(Canada)
Goat Horn arose from the depths of the Ottawa Valley, in small town Pembroke Ontario, Canada in late 1999. Composed of Jason Decay (lead vocal / bass), Brandon Wars (guitar) and Steel Rider (drum throne), the three had been in and out of bands on the local scene before settling as Goat Horn. What began as a mutual jam with only covers quickly became serious matter as Goat Horn naturally elaborated upon their one-note, slow as molasses tunes.
Their debut album "Voyage to Nowhere" was recorded on a one-day budget in February 2001 already.
In September 2001, Goat Horn relocated to Toronto, gaining more exposure and proving them selves as a threatening force to be reckoned with. During the winter of 2003, Goat Horn re-entered the studio to prepare their ferocious sophomore attack. June 24th, 2003 sees the release of Goat Horn's second coming, "Storming The Gates". |
GODDESS OF DESIRE - Awaken pagan gods (CD) (September 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Goddess of Desire is very wellknown in the undergound scene, mostly because of their great live- performances (with some lovely stage-babes). The whole thing (read: band) started at the beginning of 1995 as a fun idea but turned out to a serious band. The idea of the band was (and still is) to bring back the middle 80's feeling. Live they do this by playing a set with own songs and also several coversongs from that period.
This is the bands 4th album but their first on Armageddon Music. Like every Goddess of Desire album, this album is built out of catchy riffs and tunes, which will stick in your brain whole daylong. The main goal for Goddess is that they will never be progressive or renewing. The want to let the listener feel the spirit of metal like in the eighties. Well, my favorite metal period are the mid-eigthies and after listening to this good album I felt 20 years younger!!!!!!!!!! Even the production of this album sounds 80's!
This all even becomes better after you've seen this band on stage; I can assure that to you!
Check them out (alive & CD). Metal to the Metals!!! |
GOLEM - Death Never Dies (CD) (2004)
(Italy)
Another Italian band with a knight on the frontcover of the CD....this must be the next Rhapsody "rip-off"!!! |
GOTHIC KNIGHTS - Up from the ashes (CD) (2004)
(USA)
"Up from the ashes" is the 3rd album from the Brooklyn, NY based band Gothic Knights, but it's their first on LMP Records. The band exist since 1990 and had several line-up changes. Guitarplayer John Tsantakis and bassplayer Mario Cosentino are the only original members that kept this band alive during these years. Ex-Virgin Steele drummer Frank Gilchriest and singer Rick Sanchez are completing the line-up these days. Gothic Knights is a classical heavymetal band in the vein of bands like; Manowar, Virgin Steele and even Hammerfal. Pitty, singer Rick Sanchez has to strain his voice to much and is sometimes singing out of tune! This takes the album to a lower level in combination with the standard heavy metal tunes they use. But, with a better singer it would still sound far from original. This is not the kind of music i'm searching for...... |
GUTTURAL - Cross Words with Us (CD) (April 2005)
(France)
The French band Guttural was founded in 2000 by Ludovic Van Lierde. Ludovic started working on a concept album named "Set Swords To Music" and it was released by Brennus in October 2003. After this, the band signed a new contract for their second album with Steelborn Records. The music on this album can be described as a mix of traditional heavy metal (true metal) with lots of progressive elements. I hear influences from bands like Iron Maiden, Manowar but also some US prog-metalbands. The songs are composed very good and it's no food for the regular true metal fan. I had to listen to this album several times before i could make a honest review. Musically this album is very good but i have 2 complains about it: The productions of this album is very moderate and the singer is sometimes singing out of tune and has a terrible French accent in his voice!! So my advice: Find a good studio & add a separate good singer and everything will work out good! |
HANKER - Web of Faith (CD) (December 2004)
(Canada)
Hanker is a band from Quebec, Canada and exist since 1985. I already own their "Snakes and Ladders" and their "The Dead Ringer" albums and was very surprised by their live-performance during last years Headbangers Open Air in Germany! On stage the band sounds much more progressive & professional than they do on vinyl. The same comment i have about their latest release " Web of Faith". For people who want to listen to Hanker for the first time, this album will sound pretty standard but with a mix of power/progressive elements. Some of the songs have a high sing-a-long level. Nevertheless, the band has some great musicians and some very good, progressive songs. The only little complain is the moderate production. To compare this band with another band is very difficult; think about an older style of Jag Panzer (but not with such a great singer as Harry Conklin), the older Riot stuff and even sometimes Helloween & Iron Maiden. After listening several times to this album i concluded that this is in spite of it their best album so far. |
HARRIS, MICHAEL - Worlds Collide (CD) (2004)
(USA)
I know Michael Harris for a long time now because of his cooperation with guitar-hero David Chastain. Well, if you worked with guys like David Chastain than you are a good musician! In his early days MH released 3 full length albums with his band Arch Rival. He also released albums with Surgeon & Harris/Chastain. This will be his 5th (?) solo album and it's the first allvocal album of MH. Michael isn't a great singer at all but he's doing his job good & musically this album ROCKS! I was expecting material in the vein of CJSS/Chastain, but i was (again) surprised! The first bands i was thinking of are from a totally other style of music: i'm hearing some VoiVod & Spastic Ink influences. On a song like " Prosthetic Brain" you even hear some jazz-fusion stuff!! So if you're into prog-metal with a superb guitarplayer than you should listen (or better buy) this album! |
HATERUSH - Mark of the Warrior (CD) (December 2004)
(Sweden)
Wenn you first start this CD, your first impression goes out to a gothic band only because of the intro. Well, forget it!
Good thing about Haterush is their very good singer, Stefan Embretsson. Guitarplayer Jan Sandberg created this band together with his old ( both ex-Tale) singer Stefan. Later drummer Richard Holmgren & bassplayer Magnus Wall filled the ranks. According to the bands own words: They wanted to combine the energy of powermetal with a melodic touch of the heavy 80's". And i can tell you; they did it. Not that it all sounds refreshing but the things they do on this album sound good. Otherwise, if you want to compare this band with any other, i can mention dozen of Helloween-a-like bands like: Gamma Ray, Nocturnal Rites, Rhapsody, Iron Savior, Primal Fear,Sonata Arctica, etc, etc. ......... |
HATEWORK - Thrash 'Roll (CD) (August 2005)
(Italy)
This band was formed in 1996 and one year later they already recorded their debutalbum. This album was never released because of problems between the band and their label. After this bad experience it was very difficult for the band to start again with dedication. The band went on and played a lot of live gigs to promote theirself. In 2002 the band's first official CD "Madbent for Disaster" was finally released by Witches Brew Records. Later in 2004 the band released their 2nd full length CD for Beercity Records (also label for D.R.I. , Verbal Abuse, etc). |
HAUNTED BY ANGELS - Season of Death (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Haunted by Angels is an US band from uptown New York. The band spend most of their time in refining their line-up, musical style & image. The band is fronted by a female singer "Jane Evil" which has a good, European sounding, voice. The other musicians are doing their jobs also very well. The music can be described as a mix of traditional Heavy Metal with lots of atmospheric Doom influences. There are also a lot of progressive elements in their songs which makes the band sound original. The band already received a lot of recognition and they are asked to add songs to several compilation-CD's. In their own words; "HBA is a band on the rise, a group of dedicated, professional musicians who are destined for succes". And i have to agree with that!! |
HELL BORN - Legacy of the Nephilim (CD) (2004)
(Poland)
Hell Born is another great band from Poland. If you're into bands like Vader/Behemoth than you should listen to this CD!! The mix of old school trash & death metal that this band plays isn't original but who cares? The production sounds very good and every song on this album kicks ass! Sometimes they even remind me to the older Boltthrower and/or Autopsy stuff. Some very fast songs but also some songs with a lot of variety/breaks in it. This is my first acquaintance with Hell Born and i can tell you it pleased me very much. |
HELLFIRE - Requiem for my bride (September 2005)
(Poland)
HELLFIRE was formed in 1999 in Warsaw, Poland. After several line-up changes they recorded and published their self financed debut album, "Recoffination" in 2003. In the meantime the band replaced the drum player. With the participation of a new drummer, HELLFIRE promoted their debut through a series of concerts. Positive reactions from both Polish and foreign press encouraged them to begin working on the second album. In January 2004 HELLFIRE recorded the single "Where is the Answer?" as the sample of the upcoming material. A couple of months later the band parted ways with their bassist. In summer 2004 they recorded their latest material "Requiem for my Bride", genuine concept album. In Autumn 2004 HELLFIRE started cooperation with SONIC AGE Records, who decided to publish "Requiem for my Bride".
Well, i'm glad Sonic Age Records gave this great band a chance!! Most of the Polish bands/CD's i receive play death/blackmetal but that's not happening with Hellfire!!!
The band plays a kind of US- speedmetal, bands like Metal Church, Sanctuary and Forbidden already did in the 80's!! And that's the main reason i love this album!!
Singer Tomaz sometimes reminds me to the older (read: better) version of Warrel Dane (in his non-alcoholic period). The only thing that makes this band/CD different from the US metalbands is the bad English accent from their singer, but who cares if he screams like hell?? Not me!!
All metalheads that miss the 80's speed/thrashmetal period should buy, or at least listen to this awesome album! Superb!! |
HELGOR - CDemo (2003)
(The Netherlands)
Helgor is a four-piece band from Utrecht, The Netherlands formed in 2000. According to their promotion material all band members have different musical influences. All the guys are doing vocals on this demo. I hear a lot of different but comparible bands back in their music; Cradle of Filth, Autopsy, Macabre and also a bit of O.L.D. (Old Lady Drivers). To be honest: this demo isnt that bad at all, some nice songs (show your anger) and some reasonable songs. Pitty the production isnt that good & personally i hate drumcomputers. So guys: next time use a "real" drummer and spent a bit more time in producing the demo. |
HIRAX - The new age of terror (CD) (2004)
(USA)
I've been a HIRAX fan for years now. I love their first albums: " RAGING VIOLENCE" & "HATE, FEAR AND POWER". After years of silence the band showed up again a few years ago and released some very nice CD's but not with the quality of the old stuff. The more i was pleased when i heard their latest release "The New Age of Terror"!! The songs go back to the old Hirax roots even if Katon W. De Pena can't scream like he did in his early years!! But don't worry, he's doing his job excellent!! He's not straining his voice and nearly all the songs on this album are great. Nearly, because if have a few "little" complains: The 2 instrumental songs are not that exciting and the production of the album could have been much more powerfull. If the band decides to release a single from this album, is should be "Unleash the Dogs of War" because of the high sing-a-long chorus. |
HOLY MOSES - Finished with the Dogs (CD) (November 2005) HOLY MOSES - The New Machine of Liechtenstein (CD) (November 2005) (Germany)
What to tell about those 2 re-releases from female-fronted thrashband Holy Moses?
If you dont know these albums yet; you should be ashamed!! |
HOLY MOSES - Strength, Power, Will, Passion (CD) (June 2005)
(Germany)
Holy Moses? Never heard of this band? Shame on you! This female fronted thrashmetalband already released their debutalbum (Queen of Siam) in 1986 by Aaarrg records. After releasing 7 albums, the band split up in 1994 and reunited later in 2000. The first 2 albums after the reunion " Master of Disaster" and "Disorder of the Order" are both released by the Century Media label. This new album (their 10th) is their first for Armageddon Records. Female singer Sabina Classen was one of the first metal-ladys in the thrashmetal scene and she has a very raw agressive voice. She is supposed to be the main influence to Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow. The bio of this album already says: "No ballads, No harps, no icing of the quake; this 10th studio album of Holy Moses's history drives the bus with endless power and intuitive melodic ignition to rule the international highway of thrash". What more do i have to say? This is a very good album with some great compositions, good production and a great lay-out! Sabina is still screaming her lungs out and to me, this album is sounding modern enough to make it these days also!! Holy Moses has (again) delivered a great thrashmetal masterpeace! Compliments!!
Also read the interview Bidi did for MMM with Sabina Classen last month! |
HYADES - No Bullshit....just Metal! (CDemo) (2004)
(Italy)
HYADES is an Italian Thrash/Speedmetal band that has released both of their demo's on 1 CD. The first demo (No Bullshit....just Metal!) was recorded in 2001 and contains 4 songs in the typical 80's metal style with rough vocals. It's not necessary to mention that the musicians are all good because nearly all the Italian bands are pleased with good musicians. The production of the demo is very reasonable for a demo. |
HYPNOS 69 - Promise of a new Moon (CD) (2004)
(Belgium)
Hypnos 69 is a Belgian band, formed in 1994 as a heavy-metal orientated band called " Starflight". After experimenting with some psychedelica & general improving they canged their name into "Hypnos 69". |
ICARUS WITCH - Roses on White Lace (Maxi CD) (March 2005)
(USA)
Icarus Witch is a young band, formed in 2004, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. The band is formed by "young serious metalheads that just happen to feel the energy which made 80's metal so superior" according their biography. This EP opens with the titlesong 'Roses on white Lace' which is a coversong from Alice Cooper. And to be honest; this is the weakest song on this CD!! The other 4 songs are all GREAT and do remind me to bands like; Crimson Glory, Jag Panzer and Helstar. It's great to hear that there are still new bands who like to play "real" metal; great guitarparts, high screaming vocals & double bass, everything i need in metal!! |
ICYCORE - Wetwired (CD) (December 2004)
(Italy)
Icycore was formed in 1998 when two guys (Guitarplayer Tiziano Romano & Drummer Alessandro Bracaloni) met at the technical university of Pisa, Italy. Tha bands main influences that day: Megadeth, Dream Theater & Queensryche, The girlfriend of the drummer is Liso Oliviero and she picked up the bass parts for Icycore (She's also the bassplayer for Eldritch). On the same school they also found singer Valerio Voliani and the second guitarplayer Davide Alberti. The band signed a recorddeal after releasing just 1 demo with Underground Symphony Records. The release of htis CD was postponed several times because of various problems with the label. Finally Limb Music Porductions acquired the rights of this great album!! "Wetwired" contains a lot od Dream Theater elements and the band has a very GREAT singer in Valerio Voliani. The album has "exciting & fascinating instrumental; passages and the melodies build the framework for the atmospheric sound images of this Italian band". The band call it 'Metal in a progressive way' but i call it pure Prog_metal@!! Great album!!! |
INACTIVE MESSIAH - Inactive Messiah (CD) (March 2005)
(Greece)
This band started under the name "Womb of Maggots" back in 2001. One year and 1 demo later the band released their first official CD "Life Odium". In this year the band also started paying more attention to the creativity element in their music and started playing live shows as support of bands like; Rotting Christ & Septic Flesh. Last year, 2004, the band changed their name into Inactive Messiah. Shortly after that, a contract was signed with Black Lotus Records from Greece. The self-titled debut for Black Lotus Records was mixed and mastered at the famous Finnvox studis in Finland (HIM, Tiamat). On the tracks; 'Marble smiling Face' & 'Tell me a Reason' the band has some guest appearances from Septic Flesh members. According to their biography; Inactive Messiah plays powerfull electro-NU metal. To me it sounds more like a mix of bands like; Six Feet Under, Machine Head & Amon Amarth but less talented and with gothic & industrial influences. I'm not really impressed by this band but i'm sure lots of metalheads will like this band anyway. As a bonus, there is a multimedia CD included with video's, backstage, etc, etc. |
INCOMING - Next phase of evolution ( Mini-CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
"Next phase of evolution" is the title for the self-released EP from Incoming. Incoming is settled in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I was already impressed when i listened to the MP3 recordings on this bands website. The first song reminds me to "Roots" from Sepultura with great percussion from Rick Wendrich! But it's the only song that sounds a bit like the brasilian. Singer Marco van Eijbergen has a very strong range in his voice. He sounds like Phil Anselmo (Pantera) mixed with hardcore influences but sometimes he even sounds like "Doommetal God" Scott Reagers (St. Vitus). The song; "Flee from the mind" could have been on a St. Vitus CD also (and that's a compliment)!! I think this band has the possibility to become GREAT! After the superb Sun Caged CD i'm smashed again by a dutch band. |
INFERNAL MAJESTY - One who points to death (CD) (2004)
(Canada)
This legendary Thrashmetal band from Toronto, Canada exist since 1986. Their debut album "None shall Defy" was released in 1987 and is still one of my alltime favorite thrash albums!! In 1988 Psychopath (Bass) & Rick Nemes (drums, Ex- Rapid Tears) left the band and were replaced by Kevin Harrison (Drums) and Bob Quelch (Bass). After years of only recording several separate songs for compilations & bonus tracks for the re-releasef the debut album, the band finally toured Europe in 1997 (together with VADER, MALEVOLENT CREATION & VITAL REMAINS). |
INFLUENCE - Shadows in the Night (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Influence is a classic heavy metal band from Schagen, a place on the the tip of North Holland, The Netherlands. Since the band was founded in 1996, Influence has increasingly developed its own style, which could be described as melodious, energetic and powerful. From the very start, the band has written its own numbers, drawing inspiration mainly from Iron Maiden, but also from Metallica, Primal Fear, Judas Priest and Queensryche.
The promo 'Shadows in the night', out in 2005, is the most recent work by Influence. The promo CD 'Shadows in the night' lists four tracks. Influence has recorded several numbers during the same period and, along with those on the promo CD, these will be issued on the new album, due to appear at the start of 2006.
The band consists of Bas Assenbroek (lead vocals), Erwin van Egmond (guitar and vocals), Martijn de Vries (guitar and vocals), Fabian de Bakker (drums) and Paul van Zoolingen (bass) who replaced Chantal van 't Wout lately. |
INHUMATE - Life (CD) (2004)
(France)
This is the 4th full length album of French "grind"metal band Inhumate. |
INNER WISH - Silent Faces (CD) (2004)
(Greece)
Inner Wish from Greece is formed in 1995 when Thimios Krikos (guitar) and Yiannis Papanikolaou (vocals) came together to start up a metalband. They recorded their debut album "Waiting for the Dawn" already in 1997. After several line-up changes during the last few years they recorded this album "Silent Faces". This album is really worth listening when you're into the older type of Powermetal bands. They name Jag Panzer & Riot as their main influences, so they're not (again) a Helloween rip-off!! |
IRONY - CDemo (August 2005)
(Germany)
Irony is a German band that was formed in 2000. In this year the band already released their first demo. Later in 2001, they , again, entered the studio to record their first full length CDemo called "Release the Beast". This demo got great respons from a lot of magazines all over the world and the result of their work felt good. After several line-up changes the band did some successful gigs with bands like; Majesty and Destiny's Calling. |
I WITNESS - Idem (CDemo) (June 2005)
(Belgium)
I Witness first saw the light of day in late 1999, when 2 friends (both members of the black metalband Tyranicum) decided to form a new band. They called themselves Rex Talionis, latin for King of Revenge.
After searching for other bandmembers, the band completed their line-up lately.
Things went along nicely, they made some songs and worked hard to get somewhere with their music. They changed the name of the band from Rex Talionis to I Witness, a name that's more representable for the music they're making, a mix of everything they like. Every member is inspired by other bands and genres, ranging from blues to jazz to metal to hardcore to punk to... you name it.
This is the first Cdemo from the band and i have to say that it sounds very very moderate! So it's impossible for me to give a honest review. When i judge the Cdemo including the bad production of it; it sucks!
The band plays blackmetal but with a crap sound and it's impossible to give a it a good review. Guys, next time, please look out for a good studio/production. After that i will (probably) revise my opinion.... |
JACOB'S DREAM - Drama of the ages (CD) (August 2005)
(USA)
Finally!! The long expected 3th album of this great US-metal band!! I'm already a big fan of their first two albums and i was very curious about the new stuff with the new singer Chaz Bond. I loved the typical voice of the old singer and i was fed up to the back teeth that he left the band. Most reviews of this new album i read where not very positive but everybody who knows me, knows that i dont give a shit about other magazines and webzines opinion!!! |
JAGUAR - Run Ragged (CD) (2004)
(UK)
After waiting for a long time there finally is the new (4th) JAGUAR album called " Run Ragged".
Great to hear that this great NWOBHM band is still going for the original speedy songs. Songs like Run Raged, Feng Shui and Living Hell could have been on the debut album of these guys. The album is a great follow-up to their last album " Wake Me". Since singer Jamie Manton joined the band i never missed "good old" singer Paul Merrell. Bassplayer Darren Furze is also a good replacement for Jeff Cox (who used to be one of my alltime fav. Bassplayers). The band recorded this album already in 2002 but had to wait for a deal till a few months ago. That's really a shame because this album ROCKS!! In a few months it will be released on Angel Air Records. If you have to chance to see this band play live, don't doubt! Not only the music is great to hear, they give a great performance on stage too!! So watch out for the mighty JAGUAR!! They are more energetic than ever! |
JORN - Out to every nation (CD) (2004)
(Norway)
To me, and many others, Jorn Lande is the "coming-man" in rockmusic. My first acquaintance with Jorn was the second Ark album, now already one of my alltime favorite albums! This guy has such a great voice! After hearing that second Ark album (Burn the Sun) i bought several other bands/projects of Jorn like: Millenium, Beyond Twilight, Masterplan (his main band) and Nostradameus (with mastermind Nicola Kotzev). Everything this guy releases is SUPER!! |
KATAGORY V - A New Breed of Rebellion (December 2004)
(USA)
Katagory V is another band from the Metal Ages recordlabel. It suits me that all 3 CD's i got from this label are looking good, have great lay-outs, are technical very strong and have all good productions! Also are all the bands very progressive and it's a pleasure to review this kind of music. Katagory V is from Utah, USA and plays progressive US-metal the way i like it very much. Bands to compare: Watchtower and even some (old) Confessor are crossing my mind when i was listening to this great album! Sometimes they even remind me to some Nevermore stuff. The band has some very good musicians; Singer Lynn Allers has a very unique voice and a very wide range. Drummer Matt Suiter sometimes reminds me to Rick Colaluca (Watchtower) and completes a good ritmesection with bassplayer Dustin Mitchell. Guitarplayers Curtis Morrell & Trevor Asire are a good couple with a leading part for Curtis Morrell who wrote most of the songs in cooperation with bassplayer Dustin Mitchell. BUY IT!!! |
KHIGH - Wise Hedonist (CD) (April 2005)
(USA)
Khigh is named as a "guitar driven hardrock band" and i think that is the right description for this band from Santa Monica, California, USA. The band was formed in 2002 by guitarist/singer Kris with the goal to "break away from the save and conventional writing method and blast into new & challenging musical territories". Zed (bass) and Winnie (drums) are added to the line up to complete the band. "Wise Hedonist" is a creative hardrock release packed with catchy guitar melodies, great solo's and nice (but also sometimes boring) vocals. Personally i think its a good rock album but i'm still missing the 'little spark' that makes this album a good one. This is the bands debut album and i hope that the band will sound more grown-up on their next release because i'm convinced that they have all the qualitys they need! Maybe a second guitarplayer and/or keyboards (i would choose option1) will help the band to develope this. Also take care of a better production next time because this album sounds very modular. |
KRABATHOR - Dissuade Truth (CD) (2004)
(Czech Republic)
Krabathor is a well known band from Czech Republic with in their ranks Death Metal God: Paul Speckmann. When you like the other Speckmann material you won't be disappointed with this CD. Its all furious and fast with the typical Speckmann grunts, double bass kicking, screaming guitar & blowing bassparts! So don't expect anything refreshing on this album. So if you're into Krabathor/Speckmann then you can buy this album blindly! |
KURTZ - A Metal Heritage for Young America (CDemo) (2004)
(USA)
Kurtz is an US band with a very "modern" sound. My first impression wasnt that good because some of the (5) songs reminded me to Type O Negative (and i prefer Peter Steele's Carnivore period much more). After listening several times i had to admit that Kurtz is much heavier than the TON stuff. Most of the songs are slow but extreme heavy with some "hardcore" influences (especially the vocals). Sometimes they even remind me to bands like Pro Pain and/or Pantera. So, to be honest; it's not really my kind of band but i'm sure that a lot of metalheads will love this kind of modern metal. |
LEAF - Circle of Ways (CD) (2004)
(Germany)
LEAF is a german band that was formed in autumn 2000. It all started as a project that was assigned to contribute a song to the soundtrack for the film " The Amulett". The band signed in November 2003 with Locomotive Records (Mago de Oz, Prong, Astral Doors). |
LEASH LAW- Dogface (CD) (2004)
(USA)
LEASH LAW was founded early 2003 by singer Wade Black (ex-Crimson Glory, ex-Seven Witches) and guitarplayer Rick Renstrom (Rob Rock). After initial songwriting was underway, they realized that they needed some great talents (in metal offcourse) to enforce their "law". Bassplayer Stephen Elder (Rob Rock), guitarplayer Emo Mowery (ex-Nocturnus) and drumbeast Richard Christy (ex-Death, ex-Control Denied, Iced Earth) filled the ranks. Except for Stephen Elder, this is the same line-up as for TIWANAKU (see earlier reviews) but you can't compare these bands with each other!!! NO brutal vocals on this album (except for the backingvocals on "Hail to Blood"). Leash Law plays pure f*ckin heavy metal the way it should be!! Wade Black is screaming his balls off (figurative) like he did years ago on the Crimson Glory album (Astronomica). Rick Renstrom is one of my new guitargods, Stephen Elder & Emo Mowery are doing their jobs also very good and what do i need to tell you about Richard Christy? He's one off the best Metal drummers these days!!! Every "real" metalhead should buy this album!!! Hope to see this band on tour in Europe very very soon!!!! Fav. songs: "Fight", "Martial Law". |
LEGIONS OF BRUTALITY - CDemo (EP) (2004)
(USA)
Legions of Brutality is one of the latest projects of Greg Wagner (ex- ARCHETYPE). Good thing on all of Greg's projects is the diversity of styles. None of his projects is comparible with one of the others. Legions of Brutality i a cooperation between these musicians: Greg Wagner, Nick Gainnokos, Craig Schwartz and Micheal Harris. This EP is much heavier than his other projects and it reminds me on bands like Pantera and/or Annihilator. Lots of guitar riffs & rough voices!! It's blessed (again) with a good production.
When will any recordlabel wake up and pick up Greg Wagner and all (or some) of his projects??? Greg Wagner will be playing this years Headbangers Open Air (see LINKS) in Germany with his other band BREAKER. He told me that he will be bringing some promostuff to Germany to promote these kind of bands. |
MAD DRAGZTER - Strong Mind (CD) (December 2004)
(Brasil)
Mad Dragzter is a band from Sao Paulo, Brasil that was formed in 1998 under the name Bulldozer. After several line-up changes the band also changed their name into Dragster because their was already an Italian band with this name. By the end of 2002 they, again, changed their name because there was also another band with the name Dragster.... The new name is ('till now): Mad Dragzter. The band recorded only 1 demo before they decided to release this full- length album "Strong Mind". Mad Dragzter plays thrashmetal in the vein of bands like Slayer, MachineHead, Sepultura and i also hear lots of Pantera influences. Especially singer Tiago Torres sounds sometimes very much like Phil Anselmo. The CD contains 14 songs that all sound good and do have a lot of variety. In some of the songs i even recognize riffs from older Bay Area thrashbands like Exodus, Megadeth and Testament. These bands are all named as their influences, so it's not surprising at all. Nevertheless they fixed it to write some very good songs!! Good album!! |
MADE OF IRON - Idem (CD) (January 2005)
(Germany)
Made of Iron was founded in december 1999 by Nicko and Jim, two Greek guys living in Mönchengladbach-Germany, and Andreas and Daniel. They first played for two years as an Iron Maiden cover-band untill they decided to compose their own songs and to show all the people who said that heavy metal is dead that the contrary metal is more alive than ever before. So they released in december 2002 their first demo ''Made of Iron'' and in february 2003 their second demo with the title ''King of all Kings''. The resonance was for both demos great and so they became great reviews in many magazines and in the internet. In september 2003 was released a 7 inch with two songs.Manos Koufakis from Cult Metal Classics Records, a big heavy metal fan and collector was immediately interested and so he contacted the band. The result was the signing of Made of Iron.In July 2004 Daniel was replaced by Holger. Made of Iron plays traditional heavy metal in the vein of bands like (offcourse) Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and they do it good!! The band has some great musicians in their ranks. The only moderate musician is maybe their singer; he has a nice, clean voice but his range isnt so big. So sometimes he may sound a bit 'boring' but the rest of the band compensates this with their technical quality. This is a very nice, good produced, album with some very nice songs!! So if you're into the Old School hardrock/metal, you should at least check this band out!! |
MAGIC KINGDOM- Metallic Tragedy (CD) (2004)
(Belgium)
Magic Kingdom is a Belgium band that plays melodic power/speed metal. Mainman Dushan Petrossi (guitar) is a very talented musician and reminds me to Yngwie Malmsteen. This is the bands second album and it's released 5 years after their debut " The Arrival". Singer Max Leclerq is from France and he is doing a good job on this album. On two of the songs (Flying Pyramids & Master of Madness) At Vance's frontman, Oliver Hartmann, is filling the lead vocals. |
MANIGANCE - Memoires...live (CD) (November 2005)
(France)
Never heard of this band? Neither did I. Manigance is a French band that is also singing in the French language! Years ago it was normal that bands like H-Bomb, Sortilege, Vulcain, etc. did sing in their homeland language but nowadays its sounding a bit weird. |
MANILLA ROAD - Invasion / Metal (2CD) (January 2005)
(USA)
Manilla Road from Kansas, USA, is named as one of the most important heavy metalbands in existance. They paved the way for the so called epic-metal sound. The band is /was blessed with a die-hard core of fans. |
MANILLA ROAD - Out of the Abyss / Roadkill (2 CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
After the succesfull double CD re-issue of the first 2 albums of Manilla Road (see Archive CD reviews) it was about time for a proper re-issue of 2 other classic albums from Manilla Road; " Roadkill" (live) & " Out of the Abyss". |
MANTRA - Hard Times (CD) (November 2005)
(Italy)
Gianluca Galli formed a band in 1988 named MAD MICE with his friend Sergio Brombin on drums. After many line up changes concerts and demo recordings,in 1990 both Riccardo "Foggy" Biliotti and Jacopo Meille (the "italian" Frank'n'Furter of the Rocky Horror Show) joined the band. |
MASTER - The spirit of the west (CD) (October 2005)
(USA / Czech Republic)
What to tell about Master?? Anyone that does not know this band can better hang himself (in the Wild West tradition)…
Deathmetal guru Paul Speckmann moved to the Czech republic several years ago and formed a new local band around him overthere. Did this have any influences to Master's typical music?? The answer is NO! What Lemmy is for Motorhead is Paul Speckmann for Master! Master still delivers high quality deathmetal with a lot of variety, nothing more, nothing less!!
This album contains 12 deathmetal tracks and is well produced. So if you like the older Master stuff (or Krabathor, Paul's other Czech band); you can buy this album blind!! Great album!
Funny to this album is the Western topic; the album is dedicated to Johnny Cash and contains a coversong from him " Ring of Fire" with Paul Speckmann on vocals!!!! Check it out!! |
ME & THE REST - Another step on the long way to the top (CDemo) (October 2005)
(Switserland)
Me & the Rest is a very strange name for a rockband. The management of the band did send me this demo but without any biography so i cant tell you much about the history of the band. This band from Switserland plays pure rock 'n roll in the vein of bands like AC/DC, Krokus (The Swiss AC/DC) and Gun Barrel.
The band has played a lot of live gigs and you can hear that they have a lot of experience. A lot of the gigs they did where on motorcycle meetings so you can expect a real "partyband". Technically its not all high standing but if you're in for a party you should check out this band!! Its a nice demo with a good production. |
MELIAH RAGE - Barely Human (2CD) (March 2005)
(USA)
The brainchild of guitarist Anthony Nichols, MELIAH RAGE was formed in 1985 as his vision to marriage aspects of the thriving San Francisco 'Bay Area' thrash movement with his love of classic, melodic metal. Epic Records signed Meliah Rage in 1988, and the group recorded their first full album, entitled "Kill to Survive". The original lineup included Anthony and Jim Koury on guitars, vocalist Mike Munro, Jessie Johnson on bass and drummer Stu Dowie. In 1990 the band recorded their second studio record for Epic, called "Solitary Solitude". Unfortunately, the musical tide was changing, metal no longer became a priority for the majors, and in 1992, Meliah Rage was dropped from Epic. In 1995 the band reunited with Nichols, Koury, and Munro returning from the original cast. Drummer Dave Barcos and former Wargasm bassist Bob Mayo recorded the band's finest and most powerful album. Released in 1996 through Backstreet Records, "Death Valley Dream" was received very well, and had decent distribution. Meliah Rage is now working under contract with Screaming Ferret Wreckords. |
MEMORIZED DREAMS - Theater of Life (CD) (2004)
(Norway)
Kee Jason (guitar) formed this band is 1999 under the name: Symphonica Divine. After several line-up change s they also changed their style & name again; the more progressive result was called "Dreamscape". But this didnt last for a long time also and they decided to go back to their roots; Power Metal. The band in agreement "Memorized Dreams" saw the light of day. The band recorded their first demo "Mirror of Life" in 2002 and that resulted in a recorddeal with Sound Riot Records (Portugal). "Theater of Life" was recorded at the end of 2003 and mastered by Tommy Hansen (Helloween, Elegy, Victory, Kamelot). So you can understand there's nothing wrong with the sound quality! Their music: Well, sometimes i hear some Happy Metal influences (Helloween, Rhapsody) but i also hear some progressive parts back in their songs. Singer Olaf Hayer of Luca Turilli sings lead vocals on "Gates of Heaven" and i have to admit that this is the best song of the album! The range of their own singer Terje Haroy isnt that wide. He's doing his job well, but thats all i can say about it. Musically it all sounds good (with great drums of Olav Skei, DIVIDED MULTITUDE) but after a while the vocals begin to irritate me. So, my advice; search for a better singer and the next album will be much , much better!! |
MERENDINE ATOMICHE - Walk across Fire (2004)
(Italy)
This Italian band exist since 1995. In the beginning they even changed their target and became a Metallica-coverband. They even did 2 tours in Italy under these "circumstances". Later on they started again writing their own songs and i can tell you that i'm glad they don't sound like Metallica anymore!! In 2002 they signed to "Deadsun Records" and this album is their first on this label. This album contains 8 trash-metal songs (+ 1 CD-Rom track) in the vein of bands like Annihilator or even the older Machine Head stuff. |
METALIUM - Demons of Insanity (CD) (August 2005)
(Germany)
This Hamburg, Germany based band already released their debut album 'Millennium Metal' in 1999. Well, this is the bands 5th album and to be honest; my first acquaintance with the band on CD. I've seen this band a few times live but they couldnt impress me during their live performances. Nevertheless i was curious about this album. The band is formed around singer Henning Basse. After a few line-up changes , the band has now an unchanged formation since 3 productions in row and you can hear that on this album. The powermetal (with progressive parts) of Metalium is as tight as a duck's ass. Good powerfull songs, played with a lot of musicianship! All the members wrote the songs together and bassplayer Lars Ratz produced the album. Not only technically but also compositionally this album will kick the top of the German powermetal scene's ass!! |
METHUSALEM - Promo CD (CD) (January 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Methusalem is a band from Menaldum, The Netherlands, and was formed in 2000. They play old school power/speedmetal. This CDemo contains 4 songs that i like very much. Especially the first song 'Helepolis', which was re-recorded with their new singer, Harold de Vries. This song sounds like real 80's speedmetal. The other 3 songs are all recorded earlier with singer/guitarplayer Dennis Hoekstra who is still in the band as guitarplayer. Dennis is also doing a good job but is sometimes singing a bit out of tune. So it was a good decision to replace him for Harold de Vries. The other songs are a bit slower and have a lot of Iron Maiden influences. I'm very curious how they will act on stage, so as soon as i get the chance to see them live, i'll be there!!! |
METHUSALEM - Sentenced to Rock (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
As a result of their Heavy Metal addiction from the glorious eighties drummer Jort Visser and bass player Wilco v/d Meij founded the HEAVY METAL band METHUSALEM at the end of 2000.
Under influence of bands like Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Helloween they began their mission: 'Bring you the bible of Steel!'
Soon guitarist Dennis Hoekstra joins the band. After working with a couple of guitarists, the band finds in Dirk Jan Veenstra their second guitar player. Because of the fact that you can find a grunter on every corner of the street, but no 'Dickinson' or 'Kiske', Dennis Hoekstra takes care of the vocals. When Methusalem finds a separate vocalist in Harold de Vries in 2004, the band is now complete.
Latest news i heard from the band is that singer Harold has already 'left' the band. To be honest: on this demo he is doing a great job but on stage he was very moderate the last time i saw the band live. They already found a replacement in a former Conquestador singer and that was right on time because the band is bussy with a South European tour as support act for Blaze.
Musically and technically this demo is a big step forward for the band and it was a pleasure to review this one! Good job guys! If you're into a modern variation of NWOBHM (with a lot of Iron Maiden & Helloween influences), you should check out this band and order this demo! |
MIDNIGHT - Sakada (CD) (April 2005)
(USA)
Midnight? The once so popular singer of the mighty Crimson Glory?? Yes, indeed!! This guy made 2 awesome albums with this band in the 80's ("Crimson Glory" & "Transcedence") and also one moderate album ("Strange & Beautiful"). After the 3th album the band split up and singer Midnight disappeared for more than 15 years in the metal scene. Crimson Glory did release a 4th (awesome) album ("Astronomica") a few years ago but the vocals on that album are done by Wade Black (Tiwanaku, Leash Law, ex- Seven Witches) who did a great job too! |
MILES BEYOND - Miles beyond (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
Miles Beyond is a Power Metal band formed in October of 2002 in Flint, Michigan, USA. It features the shredding guitar duo of Tim Moody and Paul O., with Tim Moody handling vocal duties as well. The thundering rhythm section includes Larry Moody on bass and Tod Fisher on drums.
This is the bands self-titled debutalbum which is all written & recorded by the band theirself. The band sounds as a mix of bands like; Iron Maiden, Don Dokken, Riot, Y&T and Liege Lord. Their music is very guitardriven and has lots of harmonies and solos. The singer is blessed with a very powerfull and clear voice!!
The production of this album is also very good and it was a pleasure to listen/review this album!! I think that this band has really everything to become a great wellknown band and i will be one off the first to promote them if necesarry!!!!!
Great rock/metal album with great musicianship!! Check out this SUPERB album and try to watch their show at next years Headbangers Open Air festival!! (see LINKS) |
MILKMAN - Is this Punk enough for you? (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
I don't review hardcore/crossover bands that much because most of the "new" bands in this genre sound to "modern" to me. I prefer the Old School hardcore bands like: D.R.I, (old) Agnostic Front, Excel, Attitude Adjustment, Gang Green........ |
MORGANA X - Misunderstood (Promo CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
After Sun Caged, there is another great dutch progrock band showing up these days: Morgana X. This band from Arnhem already proved their qualitys on stage for several times and got good reviews all over the progrock scene. The last time i visited this band, singer Eddy Borremans had some voice problems, but on this CD he shows his talent! All the other musicians are very talented too with some extra compliments for Martijn Peters (drums) and Wouter Wamelink (guitar). |
MORON - CDemo (August 2005)
(Germany)
In 1994 some species threatened by extinction saw the light of the world. Their proud parents decided to chose the cosmopolitan name MorOn.
After several line-up changes the band finally was discovered by a Northern Germany record company (after they already released 3 self recorded/financed albums). The first full length album for this band on the new label will see light of day in August this year. The band name bands like; Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater, Rush and even Guns 'n Roses as their main influences. Personally i recognize a lot of these influences back in their music but i have to be honest to say that MorOn never reaches the high level of these bands with their own songs. It all sounds to jocular to me. Musically it al sounds nice but i have heard it all before. Singer Tobias Weber is also 'blessed' with a very boring voice. Maybe the total musical level of this band will reach higher with a good singer, but thats just an advice………… |
MOTHER MISERY - Grandiosity (CD) (March 2005)
(Sweden) Mother Misery was formed in 1998 under the name 'Nosedive'. In the beginning the band only appeared on a couple of compilations. The recording of this album started at the beginning of 2003 and got finished in february 2004. When the recording was finished, they decided to change their name into 'Mother Misery'. After a few line-up changes, the band is now completed and they are looking for a record company. This self-financed CD sounds good but isn't my kind of metal. The band has a lot of stoner-rock elements and can be compared with bands like Soundgarden or Monster Magnet. So, to be honest, this is not my kind of rock but i'm sure lots of people will love this band!! I think it will only take a little while before they got signed, i'm sure about that!! |
MYSTERY BLUE - Metal Slaves (CD) (December 2004)
(France)
Mystery Blue exist since 1984 and was at that time the first band signed by the legendary Axe Killer Records. Their first album "Mystery Blue" was released by this label. In 1986 the band already released their second album "Circle of Shame" on Dream Records. After joining the stage with bands like; Motorhead, Saxon & Def leppard, the band changed the line-up by replacing the singer for a female singer: Nathalie Geyer. In 1998 the band released their 3th album "Spirit of our Song". On this album the new bassplayer Dany, filled the ranks. Their latest album, "Metal Slaves", was recorded & mastered in Germany and released in 2003. In 2004 The band signs with Steelheart/Adrenaline Records. This label released the latest album worldwide. Mystery Blue plays old school metal with powerfull vocals that reminds me sometimes to Kate (ACID) but with much, much more power. A really great album for people who like the old 80's metal (just like me!) Technical its not of high standing but they are doing their job great!! See you guys and girl at the H.O.A festival (see LINKS) next year!! |
MYTHIASIN - Mythiasin (CDemo) (March 2005)
(USA)
GREAT!!! I'm so f*ckin' proud to be one of the first people/webzines that review Rick Mythiasin's new band/project!!!
The band line-up contains Mark & Star Coglan (a couple) on bass & guitar and drummer Dave Bellomo. From the first second till the last one; just gooseflesh !!! I was already a big Rick Mythiasin fan during his Steel Prophet period (8 albums!!) and I adored his voice on the last New Eden CD (see Archive Reviews). This guy has everything that a real metalsinger should have; to hell with Rob Halford!! This is the only Metal God!!!! |
NEW EDEN - Stagnant Progression (CD) (December 2004)
(USA)
New Eden was founded in 1993 by guitarplayer Horacio Colmenares and the band released their now classic debut EP "Savage Garden". After this EP the band signed with Sentinel Steel Records and released their first full-length album "Through the make Believe" on this label in 1997. Later in 1999, they released their second longplayer "Obscure Master Plan" through the Nuclear Blast label. This album is full of full-speed songs in the vein of bands like; Destiny's End and later Helstar stuff (but with more variety in the songs). The only big difference was the leadsinger. Not that the old singer, Tony DeVita, was singing bad, but the total sound was missing something special. Well, the bands latest release, "Stagnant Progression", does not have this problem anymore!! Ex- Steel Prophet singer Rick Mythiasin joined New Eden and i can tell you it's a very big improvement!! When you listen to songs like 'For my love' or 'Emptiness of Black Tomorrow', you'll know what i mean! Rick proves he is still one of the best metal-singers these days!! Steel Prophet made a big mistake by letting him go!! Everyone who likes real (speed)metal should buy this album!! SUPER!!!! To me this is one of the most underestimated bands these days!!! |
NIGHTFALL - Lyssa / Pural Gods & Astonishing Punishment (CD) (August 2005)
(Greece)
Nightfall, one of Greece's most wellknown bands has released their 8th album since they formed way back in 1991. This is the bands second album on Black Lotus Records. Years ago i've seen this band alive on stage and they gave me a very bad impression! Maybe thats the reason i still didnt review this album??? |
NOVACT - Tales from the Soul (CD) (April 2005)
(The Netherlands)
At the beginning of 2001 was formed under their previous name "Morgana-X" by guitarplayer Wouter Wamelink. In October 2001 Morgana-X released a Live Rehearsal Demo whichs contains the first 3 songs they have ever written. Later, in January 2003 they launched their promo CD "Misunderstood" (see Archive Reviews) and this demo was their first step to the major public. With this demo the band was signed by one the best prog-metal labels; Sensory/The Lasers Edge. By the time they signed their contract; they already had a full length album ready to be released. When i compare this album with their older Morgana-X stuff it suits me that the band has found their own style. The Dream Theater/Pain of Salvation influences they had on their demo are replaced by more original sounding songs. It all is tempered a bit more and sometimes they remind me to bands like (for example) Rush. |
OBEISANCE - Lucifer Master (CD) (2004)
(USA)
OBEISANCE is an US deathmetal band with a lot of 80's influences. Even the sound of this album is typical 80's but that fits good to the type of music. Listening to this album it reminds me to the earlier KREATOR stuff or even a bit of REPULSION. Pitty the band hasnt any originality, but how many bands do have that these days?? So after all it's a nice album that will be loved by a large group of deathmetal audience but it all sounds to standard to me. Still i think, this band has some good prospects because thrash/deathmetal is still very popular these days!! Especially in Europe (and that's a hint!!) |
OFFICIUM TRISTE - Reason (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
OFFICIUM TRISTE (formed in 1994) is a Dutch band from Rotterdam that plays doom metal the way Paradise Lost and/or My Dying Bride did in their earlier days (but than with less tempo changes). Well that is a compliment because i loved these bands first material very much!! OFFICIUM TRISTE is not using any female backing vocals and i'm glad about that because every doom/gothic band is doing this already. |
OF INFINITY - The Essence of Infinity (CDemo) (April 2005)
(USA)
Of Infinity is a gothic band from Texas, USA and was already formed in 1999 by founding members Nazareth Sando (Guitar) and Alessandra Zinicola (Vocals/Synthesisers). After completing the line-up the band settled in San Antonio, Texas where their drummer (Carlos Teller) lived. The band can be described as a gothic/doom metalband with some progressive elements. They play music in the vein of bands like; Nightwish, Evanescence and 7th Circle. Female singer Alessandro has a very clear voice that suits me! The production of this demo is very good and the promopack i received looks awesome! So if you like gothic with progressive influences, you should check out this band! |
ORDER OF NINE - Season of Reign (CD) (April 2005)
(USA)
Order of Nine was formed by Michael Degrena and Michael Chiccitt in the fall of 1997. After writing what would become the material for their first release "A Touch of Winters Discontent", they enlisted the drumming expertise of Sirera and finalized the line-up with bassist Bob Bartz. "A Touch of Winters Discontent", was releases in the spring of 1999 under the band name 'Templar', and received critical acclaim worldwide. In the spring of 2001, "Templar" changed its name and bassist. For their follow-up CD - bassist Steve Rabinovich was recruited and "Order of Nine" released "Of Once and Future Kings". The CD was received very well internationally and enabled the band to obtain a worldwide distribution deal with Nightmare Records. With their new bass player, Order of Nine headed back into the studio in the summer of 2003. The addition of Jack Buckholt on bass added a more aggressive touch, and "Order of Nine" recorded their 3rd CD- "Season of Reign" |
OUTBURST - Fair & Balanced (CD) (June 2005)
(The Netherlands)
After the split in 1998 of cult-deathmetalband Acrostichon (with one of het first female-grunters Corinne van den Brand), guitarist Jos van den Brand (brother of Corinne), guitarist Michel Meeuwissen and drummer Serge Smolders (also in Milkman, see LINKS) decided to move on under the name Outburst. Outburst plays a more popular mix of thrashmetal and Gothenburg style.
The new line-up was completed by singer Tjerk en bassplayer Tijn. After releasing a few demos, guitarplayer Michel left the band to concentrate on his other band Crustacean (note: nowadays he is playing in The Travoltas) and his position was filled up by Arvid Kuipers. After doing several tours with wellknown bands (like: Tankard, Darkane, Macabre, Death Angel, etc.) the band even played the US Milwaukee Metalfest in 2003. |
OUTWORLD - idem (CDemo) (April 2005)
(USA)
Outworld is another great progressive powermetalband which has some very talented musicians in their ranks: guitarplayer Rusty Cooley already released a solo album on Lion Music Records and singer Kelly Carpenter is also the (new) singer from Beyond Twilight (see interviews). He replaced Jorn Lande in Beyond Twilight so you can count on it that he can sing awesome!! This 4 track demo was recorded already in 2003 and it seems to be responsible for their recorddeal with Replica Records.
Despite of the moderate production, this demo is GREAT!! Rusty Cooley is a great guitarplayer which reminds me sometimes to Yngwie Malmsteen and singer Kelly Carpenter sounds like a mix of R.J. Dio & Jorn Lande. The other guys in the band are also doing their jobs great and i can tell you right now that this band is gonna be big!! If you're into bands like: Ark, Archetype, Symphony X or Dream Theater, you'll love this band!!! Check out the MP3's at their website.
Outworld has signed a worldwide deal with REPLICA RECORDS, and the debut album "Outworld" is expected for release late summer 2005. |
OVERLORDE - Return of the Snow Giant (January 2005)
(USA)
Overlorde is a band from the USA and was formed in 1985 by John "Kong" Bunucci (Bass / & Lead Vocals) and Mark "M.E." Edwards (Guitar & Backing Vocals). Dave Wrenn (Drums & Backing Vocals) joined shortly thereafter. Later in 1986 Pat O'Donnel filled the ranks as singer. After releasing a 5-song EP in 1987, singer Pat parted ways with the band in 1988 and was replaced by Rod Tyler Loiza. They started recording a new demo but unfortunately this was never finished and the band disbanded in late 1988/early 1989. |
OVERLORDE'S PERPETUAL - Idem (CD) (June 2005)
(Greece)
Overlorde's Perpetual is an all star band featuring the guitar prodigy Overlord (artistic name). Together with Bob Katsionis on keyboards (Battleroar, Nightfall, Imagenary, Septic Flesh, Magic Kingdom, etc.), Fotis Giannakopoulos on drums (Inner Wish, Septic Flesh, etc.) and Vasilis Axiotis on vocals (Phantom Lord) he recorded these 9 powerful dynamites that reminds me to metal acts like (old) Labyrinth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius etc.
Singer Vasilus Axiotis has a very good melodic voice that fits perfect to this kind of metal. His voice sometimes reminds me to the mighty Alan Tecchio (Hades, Power, Watchtower, Non Fiction) and that IS a compliment because Tecchio is one of my alltime fav. Singers!! Guitarplayer Overlorde is a great musician and proves that there are more guitar-gods in Greece (hello Theodore Ziras!). This is a very good album, so if you're into powermetal with great guitarparts and superb vocals; buy this album! |
PAGANS MIND - Enigmatic: Calling (CD) (August 2005)
(Norway)
Pagans Mind; i heard and read a lot of great reviews to their latest album "Enigmatic: Calling" so i had to beg the Benelux promoter (Hardlife Promotions) for a copy J. Thanx for that Mike!!
Norway is well-known mostly because of the dozen of Black- and Deathmetal bands. In the year 2000 Pagans Mind stepped out of this Blackmetal shadow with their progressive powermetal. In that same year PM already released their debut album and that one already got lots of great reviews! The songwriting of the new album took over one year. This album presents the best side of PM; "even more melodic, but at the same time harder and more extreme with their mixture of melodic, prog- and powermetal". |
PAGAN WAR MACHINE - CDemo (2003)
(USA)
Pagan War Machine is born in the minds of 2 L.A. based Thrashmetal bands. Jim Durkin (Guitars, ex-Dark Angel) & Steve Gaines (Basguitar & vocals, ex-Abattoir, ex-Bloodlust) started in 2002 recording some music together as a side project. They both play in a band called Dreams of Damnation too. When the first song starts (Bulletproof) i was really blown away!! Such an energy!!!! Pitty they had to use a drumcomputer at that time. They already have a real drummer (Al Mendez/ Dreams of Damnation) & bassplayer (Marcelo Lima/ Mastaba) these days. Steve Gaines voice sounds much more raw than in his Abattoir period but still he has a great thrash-voice!! "March of the pissed" is a more traditional thrash song. "Eyes that burn the soul" is the slowest track on this demo but has a very nice break/acceleration in it. "Swarm" is a great thrashsong too that reminds me on the good old 80's. |
PANTOMMIND - Shade of Fate (CD) (June 2005)
(Bulgaria)
A progressive band from Bulgaria?? Yes, indeed!! I was surprised even more by the musicianship of this band!! Pantommind was formed about ten years ago and they released their self-financed debut album " Farewell" in 1999, but since the market is as closed as it is , the band never made any impact outside of Bulgaria. Well, time changes and the band lately signed with the Italian Lucretia Records. This is the bands first album on this label and its a damn good one!! Pantommind sounds quite original but has (offcourse) lots of influences from bands like; Dream Theater, Queensryche, Savatage and Fates Warning. " The band infuses their metal with an Eastern European atmosphere, that never becomes to folk'ish or too ethnic as such, but simply embraces the music like a warm layer of emotion". These words are written in their biography and i have to admit this for 100%!! Singer Tony Ivan has a very good voice, emotional, but also dramatical in approach. Not to discredit the other musicians because they are all doing their jobs great!!
Pantommind is a band that will be more wellknown in the future, especially when its up to me!! Progmetal fans should check out this band; they deserve it!!! GREAT album!! |
PARAGON - Revenge (CD) (May 2005)
(Germany)
I only knew Paragon by name before i saw the band lately at the KIT festival (see live-review) in Germany. They did surprise me positive at this festival so when I received their latest (7th) album "Revenge" i was very curious about it!! The band already released their debut MCD in 1994. After releasing several albums on different lables, the band signed with Remedy Records in 2001. This is the bands 4th album for this label and this one is produced by Piet Silck (Iron Savior). Piet Silck did a good job on this album, much better than his moderate production of Dutch metalheads Reviver! |
PATATJE METAL - CDemo (2004)
(The Netherlands)
Patatje Metal is a band from The Netherlands. This is what they call a real FUN-band!! The band only covers dutch evergreens and mix them with a real Metal-sauce! The CDemo contains 7 songs; Pa (Doe Maar), Opzij (Herman van Veen), Vriendschap (het Goede Doel), Annabel (Hans de Booij), Beetje Verliefd (Andre Hazes), Ding a Dong (Teach Inn) & Kronenburg Park (Frank Boeijen).
It's funny to hear these evergreens with Metallica, Black Sabbath & other picked metal parts!! The production of this demo is good and all the musicians sound serious. So, if you're dutch (or belgian) and you want to have a real party....BOOK this band!!!
|
PATATJE METAL - Lik de Lolly (CD) (April 2005)
(The Netherlands) Patatje Metal is a dutch fun-metalband that already released a great party Cdemo in 2002 (see Archive Reviews). This is the bands first full length album and it contains 16 covers of dutch evergreens "packed in a metal jacket". I already enjoyed listening to their Cdeno last year and i love this album also!! |
PENETRATOR - Penetrator (CD) (September 2005)
(Canada)
Penetrator is a band from Toronto, Canada. According the short biography it's the debut album of this band. Their label Sonic Age (Greece) is very well known under the true-metal fans all over the globe.
The band did the whole production, engineering and mixing of the album all by theirself and I have to admit that the final result sounds nice.
Penetrator plays typical traditional heavy metal the way a lot of bands did in the early 80's but also sometimes with some weird influences; probably because of the strange voice of singer Maxel Black (which voice sometimes reminds me to Glenn Danzig).
Musically you can compare Penetrator with bands like; Annihilator and Eidolon. |
PHILOSOPHER - Thoughts (CD) (December 2005)
(Germany)
Philosopher was founded in 2002. They play a kind of technical 90's deathmetal and they put the gloomy ambience of H.P. Lovecraft in their music.
This is the bands first full length album and it is released by Ruptured Silence Records who have send me one of the most complete promo-packs ever!! I wish all recordlabels should deliver such quality promo-kits!!
Philosopher plays a kind of slower Morbid Angel-a-like deathmetal that suits me well!
This is, for a change, a band that has not the ambition to be an extreme deathmetalband; they are more refreshing than most of todays deathmetal bands and have a lot of fresh ideas worked out in their songs. This album isnt boring for 1 little second! A very good, technical refreshing album that will visit my CD player regularly, thats for sure!! |
PORTY - Tangram (CD) (2003)
(Spain)
PORTY, the name of a Spanish guitarist. This guy sended me his solo CD and i was surprised!!! What a talent!! If you are into Joe Satriani or Steve Vai or maybe Vinnie Moore then you should try to get this CD!! Technical this guy is equal to the above mentioned guitar-gods. The album is fully instrumental with 11 great songs, some heavy stuff, some calm songs. Finally a very good album in the instrumental guitar rock section. Excellent !!!
If you want to order it, try: www.porty-tangram.com |
POTION 13 - Porte Bonheur (CD) (2004)
(Canada)
Potion 13 = 3 ladys + 1 guy.....the line-up of this Canadian band. This band was formed in 2002. "Porte Bonheur" (which means; lucky charm) is the bands debut album and was already released in 2002. I don't have that much information about the band because nearly everything is in the French language. Even the songs are in French!! |
POWERVICE - Behold the Hand of Glory (CDemo) (December 2005) (The Netherlands)
Powervice?? This band is just formed last year but when you listen to this (3 track) demo; you'll be surprised!!
I cant tell you much about the biography of the band; only thing i know is that their singer Rogier Stockbroeks is also the singer of the best coverband in The Netherlands (or probably Europe!!); Stormrider!
Powervice play a kind of NWOBHM but mixed with their own original style. This is the kind of metal I live for!! Musically it all sounds great; metal with high pitching vocals; what do I need more??? GREAT!!!
I know that this kind of metal is not allowed anymore in The Netherlands but it suits me very well that this band will play the next edition of the Keep it True festival in the mighty Germany! They deserve it!!!
One of the best demos i heard for a while. When its up to me these guys have to be promoted maximum!!
Bands to compare Powervice with are: Iron Maiden, Tygers of PanTang, Liege Lord, Powersurge, Riot.
See you guys at the KIT festival in April 2006! Or when its up to me even earlier!! |
PROJECT: FAILING FLESH - A Beautiful Sickness (CD) (2004)
(USA)
This band was founded by Kevin 131 & Tim Gutierrez. It all mutated into existence when singer Eric Forrest (E-Force, ex-VoiVod) was added to this sonic experiment. This self-produced CD contains 10 agressive, brutal songs with some industrial influences. Last song on the album is the Venom classic: Warhead! The music is not comparible with any VoiVod stuff bit it's GREAT too! If you're looking for something original than you should buy this album! |
PRYMARY- Prymary (PromoCD) (2004)
(USA)
I met the singer of this US prog band during the latest Headway Prog festival edition in Amstelveen, The Netherlands. Did they play there? NO!! The singer just flew over from the USA to promote (t)his promo CD. Well, it's worth to do such things because i was really surprised by the professional music of this band. The first song (Promise) reminds me to the second Heir Apparent album because on this song their vocalist sounds very much like Steve Benito. I also hear a lot of Dream Theater / Pain of Salvation influences back in the songs and to be honest; they don't have to be afraid of these bands because they are on the same high level as them! Strange that such a talented band has to support their music all on their own? I hope they will be picked up very soon by a good label because they deserve it! |
PULSE - Strhana Tvar (7") (2003)
(Czech Republic)
Puls is a Czech heavy metal band that reminds me to (French) bands like H-Bomb and/or Sortilege. The band self call their music a mix between Iron Maiden/Accept/Judas priest. This band started way back in 1984 but never released anything till they reunited in 1999. At that time they released a self-financed CD "Bigbit je v Nas". This CD led up to a deal with the "Monster Nation" label.
This singel is released on 7" vinyl because some lables think this is "cult"....The 2 songs on this 7" aren't bad at all but they sound (even for me) a bit to jocular. |
PYTHON - Good & Evil (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
Python is an US-metalband that was formed in 2001 by the brothers Joe Holzapfel (vocals & guitar) and Kurt Holzapfel (drums). After developing a lot of material during the first years as a duo they hired a bassplayer 'Ken Decker' in 2003. After several gigs they finally added a second guitarist 'Geoff Allen' to their ranks in March 2005. The band is a Sullivan County, New York, based band but they play a typical Bay Area kind of US-metal. Because these guys still believe there is a place out there for old school metal, they are aspired to bring a renewed face to the metal scene. |
RADKICK - Peace of Mind (CDemo) (2003)
(Germany) Rad Kick is a traditional hardrock/heavymetal band from Germany with a female singer named Bat. They make music in the vein of bands like the old Scorpions & Trance. It's a selfproduced and financed album and they are still looking for a recordlabel. All the songs on this EP are from a very good soundquality and are composed very well by good musicians. My favorite songs: Precious Time & Stairs of a Cathedral. Hope this band will be picked up by a good label soon because they deserve it!! If you're interested in Radkick, visit their website:http://www.radkick.de/ |
RAIN - Headshaker (CD) (March 2005)
(Italy)
RAIN is an Italian band that was formed already in 1980! During all these years the band had several line-up changes but kept their 80's sound. The band was inspired in the beginning by bands like; Saxon, Iron Maiden & Judas Priest. According their biography: "they are also a bunch of very good friends that have a strong form of friendship, living in and out stage & studio". Rain has released several demo's in the past (Bad Situation, The Rain is Coming, Red Revolution) and also has 2 albums "Ten Years After" (1990) and "Bigditch 4707" (2000). This is the bands 3th album and when you look at the title, just dont expect an album full of ballads!! |
RAVEN BLACK NIGHT - Choose the dark (CD) (October 2005)
(Australia)
Raven Black Night is a band from Adelaide, South Australia and was formed in 1999. Singer/guitarist Jim (also a member of The Loving Tongue) did send me this CD a while ago. The band plays an unique combination of metal; some songs are doomy as hell (in the vein of Candlemass, Confessor or Solitude Aeturnus) and other songs are pure thrash/death-metal songs. RBN name bands like; Black Sabbath, Dio, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Saint Vitus, Slayer, Iron Maiden and Cathedral as their main influences and to be honest; i hear all these bands back in their songs!! No copies but original songs in the vein of these bands. A lot of variation on this CD as you can conclude! The band has good musicians in their ranks and its always nice to review this kind of bands/music!!! Its impossible to put this band in one of the many genres in heavy metal. I'm sure they will be loved in Europe but its very difficult for these kind of bands to share a large group of fans outside of the Australian border. Very original band which should be checked out if you're into challenges!! |
RAVENSTHORN - Hauntings & Possessions (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
Ravensthorn; for me THE revelation of the latest edition of the Headbangers Open Air festival in Northern Germany!! There played over 20 bands from all over the world but these guys where the winners!!!!! In a world of todays heavy metal with a lot of crap-genres ( nu-metal, alternative, etc) its great to find out that there are still metalbands that have stayed true to their roots and continue to play real "old school" heavy metal. These guys from Chicago exist for only a few years now but know perfect how to create the "old school" feeling with this superb album! Their music is dark and atmospheric and musically they can be compared with bands like; King Diamond, Agent Steel, (old) Flotsam & Jetsam and Tyrant's Reign. My favorite style of heavy metal!! |
RECKLESS TIDE - Repent or Seal your Fate (CD) (May 2005)
(Germany)
Reckless Tide was formed in October 2000 by female guitarist Sussane Swillus, Drummer Kai Swillus and guitarist Oliver Jaath. After searching for a while the band was joined by English shouter Andrew Troth and bassplayer Henning Pfeiffer. Later, in 2002, the band found a second vocalist Kjell Hallgreen and the band recorded their first EP "Insanity or Reality". With this EP the band already got lots of good reviews. The band won the Metal Battle at the Wacken Open Air festival in 2004 and the price was a recorddeal with Armageddon Music. This is the bands first release for this label and its a damn good release!!! The band plays Thrashmetal with a mix of modern and traditional elements, guitarriffs & melodic hooklines. The band has some guest appearences on this album by Jeff Waters (Annihilator) & Sabina Classen (Holy Moses). Added to the original CD is a DVD with material from their Wacken gig, the metal quiz and more................... |
RESPONSE NEGATIVE - Response Negative (CDemo) (2003)
(USA) Wooowwww, such an energy!! From the first till the last song you'll be blown away!! This band was founded in 2001 and have in their ranks the original guitarist from the legendary band OVERKILL (from 1984-1991), named....Bobby Gustafson! Don't expect anything in the Overkill vein, this band is much more agressive! Their singer Nick Barlow has a very powerfull grunt and isn't comparible with Bobby Blitz at all!! To compare this band with other bands: Testament; Nuclear Assault, but also some Cannibal Corpse & other deathmetal influences. The (self)production also sounds GREAT!! So if you're into the bands i mentioned above: order this album at their website: http://www.responsenegative.com/ |
REVIVER - idem (CD) (May 2005)
(The Netherlands)
Reviver is a Dutch band that was formed in 1997. In the beginning the band was bussy finding bandmembers and develope an own musical style. The band released several demo recordings and after filling the ranks with ex-Montany members Patrick van Maurik (voclas) and Stefan Brederode (Bass) the line-up was complete. |
REVOLTONS - Night Visions (CD) (2004)
(Italy)
Revoltons is an Italian band, established in 1991 by three cousins; Andrea, Alex & Pietra Corona. After a lot of line-up changes the band recorded their first full length album " Night Visions". This was already without drummer Pietra who died at the age of 26 during a heart attack!!! This album is dedicated to him. |
RHAPSODY - Tales from the Emerald Sword Saga (CD) (2004)
(Italy)
Nice! A best-off CD!! I did not own any Rhapsody stuff so far , so this is a nice way to have something off their material! Not that i don't like the band but i normally spend my money to more "Underground" bands. I've seen the band several times on stage and i have to admit they are taking their job seriously! From all their albums they have put some songs on this best-off album. Also included is a MPEG videoclip of "Holy Thunderforce". For the real Rhapsody fans, this is not interesting because they own all these songs already. For people like me this is a very nice compilation. Some of the songs are added in different versions; -Rage of Winter (Symphonic Version),
Land of Immortals (Remix), Riding the wind of eternity (Edit version). This is offcourse also done to pull the die-hard fans some money from their pockets! |
ROB ROCK - Holy Hell (CD) (May 2005)
(USA)
Rob Rock?? What to tell about this superb metalsinger?? If you're a metalhead and you are not familiar with RR, you should be ashamed!! Rob Rock starts his career already in 1986. His first highlight was the M.A.R.S. project where he joined forces with master guitarist Tony MacAlpine, Rudy Sarzo (bass) and Tommy Aldridge (drums). After the rhytm section moved to join Whitesnake, Rob Rock played in several wellknown bands like: Impillitery, Joshua, Warrior, etc.
Later, in the 90's, Rob Rock decided to start his solo-career. His first album "Rage of Creation" was already a big success and is still visiting my CD-player regularly! In 2003 RR released his second album "Eyes of Eternity", followed, again, by many appearances all over the world including the Bang Your Head festival in 2003. |
ROMISLOKUS - Trans Aviation Pilots (CD) (2004)
(Russia)
Romislokus is a Russian band that is formed by bandleader Yuri Smolnikov. Yuri is a musician since 1973 and has a lot of experience. This Cd is a very strange, progressive pop/rock CD with a lot of keyboards in it. It had to listen to it several times before i could give it a honest review. Everybody who knows me, can confirm that i have a very wide range of rock interest. From commercial music (Heart, Europe) till extreme bands (Repulsion, Cradle of Filth). Romislokus is a band that i can't place anywhere, very strange songs, weird vocals....i really don't know what to do with this CD... Some of the songs remind me to Neil Morse / Spocks Beard but thats the only comparison i can make. Romislokus did a good job on this album but to be honest; it's not my style of music. I even think it does not even belong on my website....It's not METAL....... |
ROTTWEILLER - Rage of War (Promo CD) (2004)
(USA)
ROTTWEILLER is an US band that exist for many many years now. Their debut album "Screams of the Innocent" was released several years ago by the mighty Hellion Records (see LINKS). After several line-up changes the band lost their latest singer to Metal Church. Their new frontman has a very rough voice but isnt sounding that good as his predecessors!! His voice sounds good in the higher ranges (very important!!) but in the lower ranges he sometimes is singing out of tune!! This promo demo is only a 3 track CD with a raw mix so i hope that the final album (& mix) will sound much better. When you compare these songs to the earlier stuff i have to be honest; it's not that spectacular!! It even disappointed me a lot!! I hope the guys will do much better on stage because i'm still looking out for their live-performance at next month's Keep it Treu Festival in Germany (see LINKS) |
RUSTY COOLEY - Idem (CD) (August 2005)
(USA)
Rusty Cooley?? Yes, the superb guitarplayer of US progband Outworld (see Archive CD Reviews). On the Cdemo of Outworld it was already clear; this guy is a real guitargod!! Rusty received his first guitar on his 15th birthday from his parents and never looked back. Unsatisfied with local instructors, he began teaching himself with the help of various instructional video's and books. Rusty name as main influences; Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joey Tafolla, Marty Friedman and a lot of other guitarplayers and classic composers like: Paganini and Bach. |
SAGITTA - Bad Signs ( Mini-CD) (2003)
(Brasil)
METAL lives in Brasil these days! And i don't mean all the Sepultura rip-offs!!! Sagitta (Latin for ARROW) plays melodic heavy metal in the well known Helloween/Stratovarius/Angra style. Most of the bands that try to reach the "old" Helloween level fail. Why?? Because only a few of them have the luck to find a singer in the Kiske/Kotipelto range. Well, i can tell you this; Sagittas singer Ricky Wychovaniec is very talented and he is only 22 years old, so he will grow!! I'm sure of that!! |
SARSEKIM - Paroxysm (CDemo) (December 2005)
(Australia)
Sarsekim was formed in Adelaide, Australia after changing their name from Dark Intent and reforming the line-up of the band.
After, again, several line-up changes the band recorded this demo in late 2004. The band plays a mix of technical death & thrashmetal with some very nice guitarparts! They dont have a very unique style so I can compare their music with a lot of deathmetal bands. The demo is well produced and has an awesome lay-out.
The band is now rehearsing again with some new band members and they hope to release their first full length album in early 2006. This is standard food for the die-hard deathmetal fan, so if youre interested: |
SAVAGE CIRCUS - Dreamland manor (CD) (September 2005)
(Germany)
This is the stunning debut of Thomen Stauch, Jens Carlsson, Piet Sielck and Emil Norberg. Four guys, nine tracks, this is what metal in the 21st century is supposed to be all about, at least according to Savage Circus.
The idea behind the band was spawned by Thomen Stauch as he was having trouble seeing his new compositions fit into the direction his former band Blind Guardian was taking. Discussing this with old friend Piet Sielck (Iron Savior), Thomen introduced the idea of forming a band following the style these new songs had.
Piet supplied Thomen with the contacts for Emil and Jens of Persuader who really liked the idea to work with Thomen on this project. And having known Piet for a long time as a great guitarist and an experienced producer he asked him to be a part of this new band as well. Of course, he was delighted to. |
SCARFACE / PALACE - Split CD (2004)
(The Netherlands)
SCARFACE & PALACE are both bands from my hometown Tilburg that both don't exist anymore. The main person in both bands is the singer: Huib de Vaan. He was singing in both bands for several years. This split Cd is a kind of compilation with 11 songs from Palace (1989-1991) and 3 songs from Scarface (1985). I had the luck to see Scarface a few times in the past and i can tell you that Huib de Vaan was a very good singer during these gigs!! Together with one of his biggest friends/fans, Huib made this CD possible. Both bands are playing melodic hard-rock that still would fit in the hard-rock scene these days! |
SCARRED - Shadow of conspiracy (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Scarred is a 4 piece metal band from California, USA. The band plays 80's thrashmetal the way i like it the most!!! From the very first song (The Hunted) till the latest song, it's all full speed ahead with lots of guitar shredding, nice vocals & a very good rythm section. The first song remind me to a band like Infernal Majesty. A song like "Deadly Breath" opens with some acoustic guitar and developes later in a real 80's thrash classic. All the songs have the same (high) level but don't sound original at all. But who cares??? If you have influences from older bands like: Testament, Death Angel, Eidolon and even some Solitude Aeturnus, you wont hear me complaining...... |
SEPTUAGINT - Meditation among Demons (EP CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands) Septuagint is a dutch band that exist since the beginning of the 90's. I've seen this band years ago (1993) live on stage and to be honest; they didnt impress me that timne. I was surprised they still exist these days!!! They send me this promo CD and i must admit it sounds very good! Good production, nice lay-out and both songs on this CD do have a lot of 80's trash influences which i (offcourse) appreciate very much! They did make a lot of progression during all these years. Well guys; come on with that full length album a.s.a.p., i'm very curious about it already!! Fans of 80's trash (with sometimes screaming vocals) have to order this EP through the bands website: http://www.septuagint.nl/ |
SEWN SHUT - Idem (CDemo) (2004)
(USA)
This band is from Texas, USA and was formed in 2000. They play metal with a lot of hardcore influences the way bands like Machine Head and Pro Pain do. Sometimes i even hear some Carnivore influences back in their songs. This 3 song CDemo looks very good but the production could have been much better. I also miss any original songs, it all sounds so "stolen".....for example: the second song (Pity) sounds simular to any Rage Against The Machine song. The other 2 songs could also have been op any Machinehead or Pro Pain album....... So guys, next time spend some more time in writing "original" songs. It's not bad at all but i don't think people are waiting for this kind of "coverband". |
SHAAMAN - Reason (CD) (September 2005)
(Brasil)
When Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti & Ricardo Confessori left the Brasilian band ANGRA, they where facing one of the biggest changes in their life so far. Shaaman was formed around 2000 and they already released their debut album "Ritual" in 2002. This debut album already sold more than 100 000 copies worldwide. The band later signed with AFM Records and released a live CD/DVD "Ritualive" on this label.
Well, this is the bands latest release on AFM Records and its a very nice album. Shaaman plays progressive/atmospheric powermetal in the vein of bands like: (offcourse) Angra, Symphony X and Edguy.
Producer Sascha Paeth (Edguy, Rhapsody) did a great job on this album. |
SHADOWKEEP - The Awakening (2-track Promo CD) (April 2005)
(UK / USA)
The guitar duo Chris Allen and Nicki Robson started together with the brilliant Belgian vocalist Rogue Marechel Shadowkeep in 1999. A short while later the trio took over the Thin Ice Studios in Surrey, in order to record their first self financed mini album with James Daley handling bass duties and Russel King initially on drums, later replaced by Dave Edwards. The result was a Mini CD of six songs produced by Karl Groom, guitarist of the British Progressive Metal band Threshold. Rogue's tremendous voice, often compared with and reminiscent of heroes such as James Rivera (Helstar) and Geoff Tate (Queensryche), leads the charge powered by the guitar work of Chris and Nicki that is both complex and made of cast iron heaviness. |
SHADOWLORD - Shadowlord (CD) (2004)
(Africa)
Shadowlord is a metalband from South Africa. South Africa??? Yes, even in SA they make heavymetal music!! This is the bands first album and it's self produced, developed & released. Shadowlord makes music in the vein of the older Helloween /Gamma Ray. Singer Gregen Pendragon even tries to sound like Michael Kiske. Pitty, because, even if you don't like Helloween you have to admit that Kiske is a great singer and it's very difficult to reach that high range/level. The vocals on this album are not always (or never) that clear. It would have all sound much better if the singer didnt force his voice to much. Musically it's okay, good production. |
SHATTER MESSIAH - Promo CD (January 2005)
(USA)
Shatter Messiah is a new band formed by Greg Wagner (Breaker, ex-Archetype) and Curran Murphy (ex- Nevermore, Annihilator). Anyone who reads my reviews regular knows i'm a big Greg Wagner fan. Not only becuase we became good friends during the last years but more because he IS one of the best (and most underestimated) METALsingers these days!! I love his Buzzkiller & Legions of Brutality stuff but both bands are to progressive for the big audience. |
SHATTER MESSIAH - Your Gods Demise (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
I already reviewed some Shatter Messiah stuff last Januari. The band contains 2 (ex-) Annihilator members; Curran Murphy & Bob Falzano but also has one of my favorite singers in their ranks; Greg Wagner (Breaker, ex- Archetype). Shatter Messiah is still searching for a recorddeal and its strange that a band with these qualitys still didnt find a label. The band plays a modern kind of metal which can be descibed as a mix of bands like Annihilator, Nevermore, Tiwanaku and even some Machinehead.
Technically they are not inferior to the bands i mentioned above! I have the luck to be one of the first webzines to review this album and i'm proud of that! Normally i prefer the older 80's kind of US-metal but this band has the potential to become wellknown! So labels; check out this band & sign them!! This album contains 7 full speed ahead songs that wont bore you at all. People that are interested in the band can at least take a look at their website. |
SIX MAGICS - The secrets of an Island (Promo CD) (2004)
(Chile)
SIX MAGICS is a band from Chile that exist since 1996. In the beginning their songs were in spanish but later on they turned into english songs. This a 4 track promo from the bands second album. SIX MAGICS plays epic metal in the vein of bands like RHAPSODY. The lyrics portray stories between fantastic & epic scenarios; all of this through 2 styles; baroque & classic. |
SOUL DEMISE - Blind (CD) (September 2005)
(Germany)
The year 1994 sees an early incarnation of SOUL DEMISE (formerly known as INHUMAN) and the release of the demo "Incantation". The demo garners the band a good reputation and a strong foundation. In 1996 after almost a two year growth/writing period, the band emerges with their Death/Thrash debut in the form of the album "Inner Fears". This garners the band much critical acclaim and the group supports the record with many lives appearances and tours alongside the likes of Vader, Morbid Angel and Dying Fetus throughout 1997 and well into 1998. |
SQUAD 21 - Skullduggery (CD) (December 2004)
(Germany/UK)
According to their biography; " Squad 21 play a raw stripped form of Rock with a back to basics approach designed to evoke good time emotions and give people the chance to 'raise hell". To me its more a punkrock band with simple chords, nice melodies, catchy choruses but all with a lot of power. Not that strange if you know that the band is fronted by Gus Chambers, also the frontman of Dave Lombardo's (Slayer drummer) second band: Grip Inc. |
STEALTH - Check this out! (CD) (October 2005)
(Italy)
This band/project did send me their album a few months ago and after listening to the album i still dont know what to do with this album?? I also cant tell anything about the biography of this band because i dont have any "normal" information about them. The only information is have is useless and not worth mentioning.
The band plays a mix of various styles of rock, no metal, just some rock and alternative shit! The album is produced bad and i cant find anything positive to this band. The only advice i can give to the MMM readers; dont buy this album if you're into real metal (my target group). So dont let yourself deceive by the album title; just dont check them out!! This is crap for metalheads!!!
If you're still curious (i warned you): |
STELLAR SEED - CDemo: The godz of man (2003)
(USA/JAPAN)
STELLAR SEED, the new band of the one and only John "Master of Metal" Cyriis (Ex- AGENT STEEL). Great to hear that John is still allive!!! I don't have that much information about the STELLAR SEED line-up. The only thing i can tell you for sure: John is still screaming like Hell!!! Looks his voice hasn't change anything after all these years!! This CDemo contains only 1 song; it's a great song ( in the typical AS style; it could have been on "Sceptic Apocalypse" ), only the soundquality is terrible. Why?? Because it's a rehearsal recording. Later this year STELLAR SEED will bring out a full album. I can't wait to hear it!!!!
"Masters of Metal": STELLAR SEED!!!!! |
ST. MADNESS - We make evil fun! (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Never heard of St. Madness?? Neither did i!! Well, this is the bands 4th album and it's a compilation album. To be honest, it's their 5th album because they already have an album (their debut) under the bandname; Crown of Thorns. They had to change their bandname because their was another band already using this name...... |
STONE VENGEANCE - The Angel (CD) (2004)
(USA)
Stone Vengeance is an US band that exist for over 20 years now!! I was wondering why this band has never become more public. Well, Stone Vengeance did send me 2 albums "To Kill Evil" & their latest release "The Angel" and to be honest, now i know why!! The music is jocular, boring & bad produced!! Nowadays most demo's sound 1000 times better! Sorry guys, but it's better to spend some more time in writing "modern" songs & spend some more money for a good producer/studio!! |
STRANGLEHOLD - Idem (CD) (2003)
(Belgium)
Stranglehold is a Belgium rockband with a lot of old NWOBHM influences. Listening to their album i immediately think of bands like the old Judas Priest / Iron Maiden, but is that a problem?? The production of this CD is good, to my opinion it could be a bit "Heavier". The songs: most of the songs are on the same speed/level, so a bit more variety would be better. I'm also not impressed by the vocals on this album. Maybe that's why "Antartica" (instrumental) is one of the best songs on this album. The Megadeth cover (Motorpsycho) is also very close to the original but thats probably because Dave Mustaine is a moderate singer too!
But after all: a nice album with some very good songs. |
SUIDRAKA - Command to Change (CD) (June 2005)
(Germany)
Suidraka already exist for more than 10 years and this is the bands 7th album, but their first on Armageddon Records. To be honest: this is my first acquaintance with the band and after listening to this album i have to admit that i didnt miss a lot. The band is playing rather original music but its all sounding to modern. I'm also done with all these bands that convert folkmusic, etc. in their songs. The band has some nice, but not super, musicians and the singer is sometimes really boring (to me). Musically it sounds like a mix of (old) Paradise Lost, Machine Head and a bit of Type O Negative. Not really my taste of metal but i'm sure a lot of (especially younger) metalheads will love this band/CD. The band describes their music as " Melodic Deathmetal". If you like the bands i mentioned above; check Suidraka out. |
SUN CAGED - Sun Caged (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
This is the best thing that happened for years in The Netherlands!!! Forget about Dream Theater or Pain of Salvation; Sun Caged rule!! I'm not a chauvinist at all but i have to admit that this band is the best thing The Netherlands ever released!! I already knew that the dutch "Satriani" Marcel Coenen was a great guitarplayer but this exceeds everything!! But it's not all up to Marcel Coenen (ex-Speedica, ex-Lemur Voice, Time Machine, Stormrider) offcourse: The whole band is build up with great musicians: Drummer Dennis Leeflang (ex- Within Temptation, Bumblefoot), Keyboards Joost van den Broek (Star One, Time Machine), Bassplayer Rob van der Loo & their new singer Andre Vuurboom (ex-Imperium, ex-Jare). All guys with lots of experience and a good taste of ProgMetal!! Singer Andre Vuurboom sounds a lot like Dream Theater frontman James Labrie and fits great in this wonderfull music!! Last night i saw the band playing live and i can tell you that they are even better ON stage!! So if you get the chance to visit one of their shows: BE THERE!! Fav. song: Sedation. |
SYLVER MYST - Depths of Illusions (CDemo) (December 2005)
(The Netherlands)
By the end of the year 2001, Sylver Myst is being founded by several friends from the south of the Netherlands. In May 2002 they record their first demo-cd "The Bleeding Snowlands". After a couple of successful gigs, a change in the line-up occurs. In the summer of 2003 the band is finally complete and hits the studios again. The demo-cd "Strains of Souls" is the result (see Archive CD/DVD reviews). |
SYLVER MYST - Strains of Souls (EP CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
Sylver Myst is a dutch band that is formed late 2001. This CDemo is their second one but the first with Marjolein Husten on lead vocals. The music reminds me to bands like Orphanage/Within Temptation but mixed with a lot of "poppy" influences. The 3 songs on this CDemo are nice but to my opinion the compositions could be more complicated & heavier. They are all very talented musicians (they proved me that during a live gig last month) but they have to spend more time in songwriting next time and i'm sure they will make it! |
TARANTULA - Metalmorphosis (CD) (September 2005)
(Portugal)
Tarantula was already formed in October 1981 by the Barros brothers. After successful gigs in Portugal and Germany and two demo tapes, the band signed their first record deal in 1987. The album - entitled like the band - was the first one released in Portugal by a domestic heavy metal band and sold out in just a couple of weeks. In 1990 "Kingdom of Lusitania" was released putting the band's name in the international metal scene. They received several record deal proposals, but their domestic label, the multinational Polygram, didn't want to co-operate with them. |
TEARABYTE - Gloom Factory (CD) (January 2005)
(USA)
Tearabyte was formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, USA. Their debut CD "Doom Generation" was released shortly after. In 2000 the band relocated to Dallas, Texas, USA Later, in 2002, they released their 2nd cd entitled "Embrace Oblivion". |
THANATOS - Undead. Unholy. Divine (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
"By pissflap": that are the words that opened their biography on their first demo i bought way back in 1984. Thanatos is a dutch deathmetal band that exist since 1983/1984. This is the bands 4th full length album and their first on Black Lotus Records (also the label from Leash Law). This album is recorded in the famous Excess Studio in Rotterdam, The Netherlands (Elegy, After Forever, Sinister) and that's audible!! This album sounds killer!! In their early days Thanatos was a pure deathmetal band. I always called frontman Stephan Gebedy "the dutch Chuck Shuldiner" because of his (nearly) simular voice & his way of playing guitar. It strikes me that the band plays nowadays a mix of death metal with some older thrash influences (Kreator/Destruction). But it's not a complain!! I like this album very much and it will be in my CD player for a long time, that's for sure!! |
THE ACCUSED - Oh Martha! (CD) (October 2005)
(USA)
After years of silence; here is finally the new (8th) album from The Accused!!!! The album contains 13 songs of "blood soaked, carnage-crazed oldschool punk/metal mayhem". The Accused are an undeniable influential band to several current heavies of rock and they are also the originators of the term "Splatterrock".
The band has nowadays the same line-up as they had 15 years ago during their "Hymns for the Deranged" album.
I've seen the band several times in the past and listening to this album i can conclude that they still have that pure energy!!! Everybody who has seen the band on stage in the past knows exactly what i mean. The album rocks from the beginning till the end and i'm looking out (again) for a new European tour from these guys!! Great album!!!!! As a bonus The Accused also added their classic 5-song "Martha Splatterhead" EP on this album (re-recorded & restyled). There's also a cover from the Party Animals (Dutch Mellowband) on it with the song: 'have you ever been mellow'……..Funny!! |
THE ACCUSED - Video Archives Vol. 1 (DVD) (December 2004)
(USA)
Wowwwww, a real The Accused DVD!! Singer Blaine Cooke surprised me a lot with this gift!! I already knew that they reunited but i didnt know about any DVD. I don't own any The Accused stuff, but i'm a big fan for years now and i have seen the band alive 7 times in Europe. This DVD contains 38 (!!) songs recorded on home-video format at 17 (!!) venues in the USA (1986-1991). It's a pleasure seeing Blaine Cooke & Co going wild on stage!! To use the words on the cover: "Live from the slam-pit, punkrock footage from the personal stash box of the 'Kings of Splatter', The Accused!! A bunch of songs from a variety of weird sources make this home-video collection a head-thrashing rollercoaster ride of noise, mayhem and pure fun as seen through the usually bloodshot eyes of the 'Splatterheads' who make up their loyal fans". Also added are some personal home-movies of offstage antics. This is CULT!! Hope to see them back in Europe soon because this band belongs on stage!!! |
THE AERIUM - Song for the Dead King (CD) (March 2005)
(Russia)
The Aerium was born in 2001. Three of the musicians played together in a project called 'Version'. Later they decided to begin a new project in a totally different style and female singer Veronika joined the band. The Aerium plays symphonic, gothic, atmospheric metal in the vein of bands like Epica and they even sound a bit like Nightwish. After releasing their first demo at the end of 2002 the band recorded this follow-up and got signed by Black Lotus Records from Greece in 2004. It all sounds nice but i'm a bit spoiled with all the great gothic bands in my own country (The Netherlands). I also have to admit that i'm not a fanatic goth-metal fan and it's difficult for me to review this kind of music. Personally i think it will be difficult for this Russian band to survive the enormous wave of gothic bands these days!! I wish them all the luck!! |
THE BEREAVED - Darkened Silhouette (CD) (May 2005)
(Sweden)
The Bereaved was already formed in 1998 by Nikael Nilsson (bass) & Henrik Tranemyr (guitar). Later, singer Johny Westerback and guitarplayer Tony Thoren joined the band. After a few line-up changes, the band finally did a song for the Blind Guardian tribute album and recorded a few demo's. With their latest demo "Inverted Icons" the band was discovered and got several contract offers. They decided to sign with Black Lotus Records and recorded their first album in January. "Darkened Silhouette" is the bands debut-album on BLR and i have to admit that it suits me very well. The Bereaved plays melodic death/thrash metal in the vein of bands like Children of Bodom & Carnal Forge. The production of this album is good and the lay-out looks great too!! If you're into Swedish Death/Thrash , you should check out!! |
THE CONSPIRACY - 3000 Crosses (CD) (April 2005)
(USA)
The Conspiracy is a band from Traverse City, Michigan, USA which was formed in 2001 by vocalist Jim Steele & guitarist Michael Dargis with the intention to form a real metalband that does not follow the mundane sound of the heavy music scene. They both had the same feelings about how "modern" music should sound and started writing and recording demo material at Jim's home studio. The line-up was later completed by bassplayer Pete Henry and drummer Matt Richmond. This is the bands first full length album and it is released by their own 'Mad Messiah Music' label. The band plays powerfull & melodic heavy metal in a very original way. So it's difficult to compare this band with another band. The band sometimes remind me a bit to bands like Meliah Rage and Megadeth but with raw vocals. So if you like US metal and are NOT into high screaming vocals, you'll probably like this band very much! Good album with a moderate production. |
THE DEAD PRJCT - Idem (CDemo) (2004)
(Canada)
THE DEAD PRJCT is a project of Kendall Bechtel & Thomas Niemeyer. Thomas Niemeyer is also known as a member of the mighty crossoverband THE ACCUSED (They're back!!!) and later on he joined GUNTRUCK. Well, don't expect anything in the vein of these bands; this music is totally different!! The first song (Did Ya?) still has some crossover infuences in it but the other songs are all in totally different styles. A song like "Sneaky Teacher" reminds me a bit to the later Type O Negative/ Danzig stuff but this time with cleaner vocals. On "Can't Beleive" Kendall even sounds a bit like Ozzy Osbourne. |
THE GREAT KAT - Extreme Guitar Shred (DVD) (March 2005)
(USA)
"The Great Kat announces her first "Extreme Guitar Shred" DVD". |
THE GUARDIAN - Dragonland (CD) (October 2005)
(Belgium)
Guardian was already formed in 1997 by drummer Ronny Smeekens and vocalist/guitarsit Luke Lambrechts. After a long search (5 years) they finally completed the line up in 2002.
This is the bands first album and its a self produced & financed album which contains only true metalsongs in the vein of bands like: Manowar, Majesty & Double Diamond. Listening to this album didnt give me a satisfied feeling; why?? I have the feeling that the songs on this album are not really finished yet and its very pitty also that the production of this CD is very moderate.
I really have the feeling that this band can do much better but have to wait for a while to sort the songs out very carefully. According to the info; the band will release another album at the end of this year and i hope they will take my advice.
Another advice is to search for another, separate, singer because i think it is better for singer Luke to concentrate fully on his guitarplaying. Still i'm very curious for their new album and i hope that the band will send me a copy of it for a new review of that one……… |
THE KRUSHERS - Megaloi Theoi (Demo tape) (2003)
(Italy) These guys from Agrigento, Italy did send this tape months ago to me but because of not using my tapedeck anymore this review is delayed.....sorry for that! Well here it is: The Krushers are influenced by bands like Kreator, Destruction, Sacrifice, all with a mix of harcore/crossover. Nothing wrong about that! Pitty it al sounds to jocular after all. Even the soundquality sounds like the early 80's trashdemo's: untidy and noisy..... They also cover one of the best Kreator songs ever; "Under the Guillottine". And to me that is the best song of the demo (out of 8 songs). It 's not bad at all, but please spend some more time on the production/songwriting next time! Visit their website & order the tape if you like the bands mentioned above: http://www.thekrushers.net/ |
THE PHARAO'S - Open Fire (CD) (2004)
(Germany)
The Pharao's are a German band that is formed in 1998. The band plays pure heavy R&R which reminds me to the later Motorhead stuff. Some of the songs could have been on Motorhead's albums and some of them sound even "stolen" from Lemmy & Co. For example: the opening riff on "My Price" sounds very very familiar to me and reminds me to the older MH songs. The band is a 3-piece band and they have a guitarplayer (Gironymo) and a bassplayer (Cyscale) that both do leadvocals. The vocals are a mix between (surprise!!) Lemmy (Motorhead), Brian Johnson (AC/DC) and i even hear sometimes a bit of Udo (Accept) in the songs. The songs aren't original at all, but who cares?? I prefer this band above the Dutch Lemmy-ripp off 'Peter Pan Speedrock". Hope to see these guys someday on tour (with......). So, if you're into Motorhead (like me), then you should listen to this album!! It ROCKS!! |
THEOCRACY - Idem (CD) (December 2004)
(USA)
This is the 3th album i received from the MetalAges Record label. Theocracy can be described as a "white-metal" band because "they" are singing about the christian religion. "They" because the band is an one-man band; Matt Smith. Matt played all instruments by himself and even programmed the drum computer. But that's not all: he produced, engineered & mixed this album also!!! And he did a good job!! |
THUNDER RIDER - Tales of darkness & light - chapter 2 (CD) (2004)
(Canada)
This is the second album of this traditional heavy metalband from Canada. Never heard of them? Neither did i. The band sended me this album last month and i was very curious about their style of metal. The CD contains 15 songs and looks very groomed. Singer John Blackwing has a very strange voice that not everybody will like. He has a small "range" in his voice and after a while it began to irritate me. The music is sounding well but could need some more variety too. Most of the songs are mid-tempo and when you combine that with the moderate voice......just fill it in yourself..... |
TIWANAKU - CDemo (2004)
(USA)
Never heard of this METAL band?? Well, i bet you know most of the members: |
TO-MERA - To-mera (CDemo) (December 2005)
(Hungary)
To-Mera was formed by Julie Kiss and Lee Barrett (ex: Extreme Noise Terror / Disgust / Mussolini Headkick) following her acrimonious departure from the Hungarian progressive metal band Without Face
She felt that she still had a lot more to offer musically and set about finding like-minded musicians in order to persue that goal. Fellow Hungarian Akos was brought in on drums. Later Tom MacLean was found after he recognized Julie and introduced himself at a concert. As well as being a huge metalhead in general, Tom has also studied Jazz guitar to a high level. |
TORMENT - Tormentation (CD) (August 2005)
(Germany)
Torment? Yes, i knew the bandname but honestly; i never heard anything of their stuff! Well, this is the bands 20th anniversary CD!!! Shame on me because this is very nice party-music that reminds me in the first place to one of my alltime fav. bands; Motorhead! The music of Torment is also more a mixture of swinging Thrash 'n Roll with some hardcore influences. With song titles like: 'P.C. (Porn Casting)', 'Bestial Sex', 'Heavy Metal Hooligans' and 'What shall we do with the drunken Torment' you cant take it all to seriously but who cares? As long as we can party!!!
If you're into bands like; Tankard, The Mentors, GWAR and Dayglo Abortions; you'll love this band!! Fun-metal with a lot of nasty lyrics; no problem for me at all!! This CD is also available as a limited 20th anniversary double CD with a lot of Mpeg video's as bonusmaterial. Also very nice is the MotorSchool/GirlHead cover 'Please don't Touch' which features Sabina Classen (Holy Moses) on vocals. |
TOWERSOUND - Idem (CD) (August 2005)
(France)
Towersound is a band from France that was formed in 2000 by two brothers; Jon & Lonn. Later in 2001 Flo filled the ranks of this melodic power/heavy metalband. The band mixes several different influences in their music; from baroque to celtic music. In 2004 they recorded their first full length album on the French label Brennus Music. |
TWILIGHT ODYSSEY - Twilight Odyssey (CD) (November 2005)
(USA)
While working in a band known as "Urshurak", guitarist Ben and drummer Sal Pellerito came across female lead vocalist Pamela "P.J." Berlinghof. Pamela and Ben rapidly developed a prolific writing partnership producing material that incorporated their classic metal influences along with the more challenging elements of progressive music. Soon after, guitarist Dan Castro and bassist Gennady Khirich stepped in to complete the line-up. With a full crew they decided to ride the winds of change and officially adopted the name Twilight Odyssey. Dan Castro left the band in 2004. Second guitar duties for live performances are currently being handled by Mike Levak. |
TYRANT'S REIGN - Tyrant's reign (CD) (2004)
(USA)
No, this is not a band from Jag Panzer frontman Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin!! Tyrant's Reign is a US cultband that was founded way back in 1985. After a few demo's the band split up in 1990. The more i was surprised to hear that they will playing this years Keep it True Festival in Germany (November). After a visit to their website and some contacts with the band, they sended me their "latest" album.
"Latest" because it's a compilation CD with old recordings from their 1988 & 1989 demos and some rehearsal recordings. All the songs are re-produced & mixed lately and i can tell you they sound amazing!!! If you're into the likes of (old) Exciter, Hirax, Attacker, Flotsam & Jetsam and even Fatal Violence, you should listen to this album!! This is metal the way i like it most; screaming vocals, great guitarparts/riffs and doublebass drums. Hopefully they will record also some new stuff after their reunion because i cant' wait to hear it!! If singer Randy Barron still screams the way he did on this recordings, i will be on the frontrow of the KIT festival later this year (see LINKS). That's for sure!!! |
UNCHAINED - Unchained (CD) (March 2005)
(Sweden)
Unchained is a band from Sweden and was formed in 1999 by axe-man David Blome. After releasing a single 'The Antediluvian World' and several line-up changes the band decided to hit the studio again in 2002. They recorded their debut album "Like the Candle" and did several gigs after that. At the end of 2003 they felt it was, again, time to record a promo "Theater of Fear" and they got signed to Sound Riot Records in september 2003. Well, here is their first album for this Brasilian label! The band plays melodic metal in the vein of bands like Iron Maiden and Pretty Maids. Listening to this album it counts me that i hear a lot of recognizable Iron Maiden riffs. Pitty singer Per Karlsson can't hit the higher notes clear every time. On some of the songs 'The Analyst', 'I Dream', 'Seventh Sin', singer Mattias Osbeck is doing the vocals and he's doing his job much better!! |
UNDER EDEN - The savage circle (CD) (September 2005)
(USA)
Under Eden took shape as a three-piece band in the fall of 2000. The band plays a mix of US thrashmetal and Scandinavian black/deathmetal in the vein of bands like Hatebreed and Dying Fetus. |
VALKIJA - Avengers of Steel (CD) (January 2005)
(Italy)
Valkija is an Italian band that is formed in 1999 and they play classic metal with some powermetal elements. The band signed to Sonic Age Records lately because this label was impressed by their 'Days of the rising Sun' demo. The band has a female singer, Zoraya, that sometimes sounds like Leather Leone (Chastain) and also Ann Boleyn (Hellion). The band is influenced by real old school bands like: Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon, Dio, but also by some happy-metal bands like: Primal Fear or Heavens Gate. It all sounds nice but is far from original. I also have some little complains about the lead vocals; Zoraya is not singing bad at all but sometimes she's singing a bit out of tune. On the other side she sometimes screams like hell!! On this moderate produced album is also a guest performance of the Bloodstained singer. The other musicians are doing their jobs great!! Another complain is the awful cover of the CD!! Long time ago i have seen such an ugly artwork.... |
V.A. - Blackmore's Castle ( A tribute to Deep Purple/Rainbow) (CD) (2004)
(V.A.)
My first "tribute" CD to review. Well, i think it's only important to mention the good & bad performances because everybody who likes Deep Purple / Rainbow knows these songs already. |
V.A. - Heavy Metal Maniacs Part 3 (CD) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
The "HEAVY METAL MANIACS" are a true heavy metal fanclub! These guys (& girls) try to keep the metal spirit alive in The Netherlands (just like me.....). This is a very difficult job because "real" heavy metal isnt that popular in The Netherlands anymore. Strange if you look to our neighbours Germany where this type of metal is still extreme popular these days!! The HMM are organizing a festival every year and also release compilation CD's regular. This CD is their 3th one and its a mix of old dutch bands like: MARTYR, SWORD, SAVAGE, DARK WIZARD, GILGAMESJ, RESTLESS, WOLVERINE & TOGETHER, but also some very nice "new" bands like: CONQUESTADOR, INFLUENCE, CHAINSAW, ROADKILL & IT LIVES. I really share their goals: " drink some, taste some, bang some & give hell to the rest!!" Denim & Leather Forever!! These could have been my words....you guys rock!! |
V.A. - Louder than the Dragon (2 CD) (2004)
(everywhere)
Compilation CD's are always usefull to coordinate yourself into a particular way of music. This digipak double CD features 28 songs, three videos, a poster and sticker as extras. It will appear in the stores as mid-price CD and therefore less expensive than even a normal CD. A few of the bands on this sampler are already reviewed on this website. |
VANILLA REX - Shadows of Insanity (CD) (March 2005)
(Germany)
Vanilla Rex was founded back in the late 80's. After the band recorded its first demo "Hydrophobia" in 1988, they received some good reviews and were signed by Inline Music (also ACCEPT's "Breaker" album was released on this label) to record a full length album. The bands second demo "Kick Ass City" was the result of the pre-production of the album. Because of the lack of company support, the band cancelled their contract and the album has never been released. After several line-up changes the band changed their old NWOBHM style into a more powermetal style. After releasing, again, several demo's, the band took a break for about 2 years to find new musicians. |
VARATHRON - Crowsreign (CD) (May 2005)
(Greece)
In 1988, four "unholy" souls united their dark forces under the flag of Varathron. The band released their first album "His Majesty at the Swamp" by a dutch label (CyberMusic Records) in 1993. The band had several line-up- and label changes during all these years but kept on playing "Daemonic Metal". Their music is a mix of dark and sinister melodies and is difficult to compare. This is the bands first release for Black Lotus Records. The album is sounding good but it can't impress me at all. The music can be compared with another greek band i dont like; Rotting Christ. I do like Death/Black/Thrashmetal but not the way these band perfom it. Probably will their music be loved by lots of people but it really isn't my taste at all. |
VEXED - Destruction Warfare (CD) (October 2005)
(Italy)
Vexed were formed in 1996 by Mik with the intention to aim to a devastating black/thrash metal tied to the 80's old school. In 1999 the debut album "Abyss of Agony" is released, more than 400 sold copies and 450 promotional copies were spread.
In 2003 the band recorded the second full length album called " Nightmare Holocaust" released from Witches Brew Records.
Well this is the bands 3th full length album and this one is, again, released by Witches Brew Records (also the label for Hatework; see CD Archive Reviews). The band plays old school thrashmetal in the vein of bands like; Pentacle, Desaster, Destruction (cover of Destruction also on this album: Total Disaster), etc. |
VICIOUS - Vile, Vicious & Victorious (CD) (2004)
(Sweden)
This band started way back in 1999 under the name; "Rage Anthem". After recording 1 demo with this band they changed their bandname into "Wargasm". After several line-up changes they changed their name again (in 2001) into "VICIOUS". At the end of March 2003, Henrik Wenngren joined the band as their new singer. Shortly after that the band is picked up by Sound Riot Records (Portugal). This is the bands first CD for this label and it's produced by Pelle Saether (Ebony Tears, Terror 2000) and mastered by Peter in de Betou (Dismember, Darkane, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth). Vicious play a mixture of trash & melodic deathmetal in the typical Gothenburg style. Most of the songs are very energetic & intense. Expect some music in the vein of bands like: Ebony Tears, Hypocrisy and The Haunted. So if you're into this kind of bands, you should listen to this album!! Fav. songs: "Life Corrupted", "Deathrash". |
VIOLENT SOLUTION - CDemo (Raw Mix) (2004)
(The Netherlands)
This band from Tilburg, The Netherlands pre-released a CDemo with 3 tracks that will also be on their upcoming album. Good idea to call it a "raw mix" because the production is terrible!! The upcoming album will be produced by the Pro Pain team (which are very close friends to Violent Solution); Gary Meskil & Tom Klimchuck, so that one will sound a lot better....i hope..... |
VORACITY - Manipulation (CDemo) (2004)
(Suisse) Voracity is a band from Switserland and they play a mix between trash/deathmetal. This 5 song CDemo has a reasonable production. The title track of the demo sometimes reminds me to Macabre, maybe because of the weird backing vocals. The songs are all nice but far from original, i've heard it al before several times... For a demo it's good but i doubt if they will get a recorddeal with this stuff. So guys; practice a lot more and spent some more time i writing original songs. I'm sure it will all sound a lot better within a few years!! Good luck!!! |
